So I'm watching bits and pieces of the FSU Garnet and Gold Spring game on ESPN this afternoon watching these 6'3" 210 lb athletes run and jump all over the field and I realize that if even 1/3 of these kids decides to play futbol instead of football the USA would dominate the world in soccer.

In all seriousness, there's probably the potential for 2-3 Mario Bellotti's on FSU's team.

You do realize there is just a wee bit of tactical and technical ability to "futbol" that these guys don't even come close to possessing right?

Nah. Technical ability is much more important to a successful side. Messi, Iniesta, Neymar, etc. are living proof that you don't need to be Megatron sized to be successful (and most of the time, that's a detriment).

We wouldn't dominate, but be on the same level as Germany and Brazil for sure. Also 6'3 is tall for a soccer player, generally you want shorter players for their low center of gravity.

Football and soccer are almost at opposite ends of the athleticism - skill spectrum. Football requires nearly zero specialized skill, only elite athleticism. Soccer requires a little of both, but skill is a lot more important.

That's why I think JAB has some of the highest upside on the squad.

6-foot-4 190-200 pounds. Although he grew up in Germany, he's a son of a American.

Moves extremely well, played really well in Bundesliga down the stretch and against Ghana, and showed he's not afraid of the big stages at a young age.

obviously. the point being, if those kids played soccer in their earlier years instead of football their skills would be honed and the amount of athletes playing soccer in the US would be unmatched.

Good motor skills are good motor skills, it's just a matter of what sport you decide to focus on.

Nah. It doesn't work like that. Kobe Bryant and Ocho Cinco played soccer their entire lives and they were never any good.

These guys don't necessarily have good motor skills.

They have good motor skills for their size. That doesn't necessarily translate to the pitch.

Cristiano Ronaldo is an athletic freakshow and once in a generational talent.

Most elite soccer players are smaller guys than 6'3 235.

That's why I said 2-3 on their team, not 85.

There are 7 billion people in the world.

And only a handful of truly elite soccer players.

It is highly, HIGHLY unlikely that even one of those guys even sniffed the USMNT.

are you serious? you truly believe that if the kids playing CFB hadn't focused their energies growing up on soccer instead that we wouldn't be an elite world power?

If you think soccer players are just born and not made you're kidding yourself.

Foot/eye coordination =/= hand/eye coordination

Some great DBs or WRs could maybe be good keepers but football athleticism does not translate to soccer athleticism.

I hate these stupid threads.

I think you're confused. You're the one arguing someone could be an elite soccer player based simply on genetics.

so people that have good hand/eye coordination don't have good foot/eye coordination?

seriously, i could make the argument that if the populace in general played more soccer as youths that we'd be an elite world power, but because I use football as a reference point the assumption is that they're hand eye coordinated but not foot-eye coordinated?

The more athletes in this country that play soccer, the better it is for the USMNT. Period.
