Just curious.....when and why did Holland start being referred to as Netherlands? Can't seem to find an explanation for this.

I dunno, they do have an unofficial divide between the north and the sout if I remember correctly. I haven't exactly taken a hard look at a map of Holland recently though.

I think they have a few islands as part of their territory so maybe they just go by Netherlands when they combine the nations for sporting events and such.

I really have no idea though, I'm just spitballing here.

Ruud doesn't really like when people call the Netherlands Holland cause Bob Ley would say Holland and then look at Ruud and say, "Excuse me, the Netherlands."

The Netherlands is the whole country. Holland is just one region/province of The Netherlands.

Calling The Netherlands Holland would be like calling Canada Quebec.

Do people from Holland like that?

Because the Quebecois would probably love that

i think a better analogy would be like using "england" to refer to the entire united kingdom.

There are actually two provinces, North Holland and South Holland, that make up Holland. Holland is on the west coast of The Netherlands, and includes the three largest cities in the Netherlands, including the capitol (Amsterdam) and seat of government (The Hague).

Generally, Dutch living outside of the Holland area do not like for it to be referred to as Holland.

yep.. (except that Holland isnt its own country) just like everything else in Europe, it all goes back to kingdoms, empires and dynasties

I mean, isnt the Queen of England still considered the Queen of England, Great Britain, The United Kingdom and France?

Nah, most Dutchmen get annoyed that you don't know the true name of the country when you say Holland. I suppose Quebec was a bad choice as an analogy in Canada due to the political issues. Let's use Alberta instead.

Holland:the Netherlands::Alberta:Canada

I'm able to make such a dynamic analogy because I went to the University of Virginia instead of Virginia College.

According to the BBC style guide, Holland and the Netherlands have been and will continue to be used interchangeably when it comes to soccer.

Judging from the picture that guy posted, they stole our soccer uniforms, color scheme and logo too.
