I have a 2004 FX4. has 130K on it. Had the timing chains (and all that would entail) replaced in January to the tune of 2K. The latest is: I am out of town for a week so my truck sits. Get home and crank it up. The "Check Guages" alarm goes off, and the oil pressure goes to 0, the alarm clears and the oil pressure reads as it should, repeat..... it does this four or five times as I sit in the driveway in idle. After I verify oil level is good, I crank it up and let it run and it starts running real rough, like misfiring. Based on the research I did on the F150 forum and other places the sympoms I have are BAD news. Most say when they took it in to the shop it was new engine time. Going to take it in later this week to have it looked at but was just wondering if any OB F150 truck owners have experienced this. Thanks.

My cousin had an 04 FX4 with 170K on it and had almost the same thing happen to him about 3 months ago. They told him he needed a new engine. I think it was going to cost him around 7K. He ended up selling it for $3500 as is.

I have a feeling I am in for some bad news based on what I am hearing from others. If engine is shot, then that is 5-8K to replace, depending on new or rebuilt etc... Decision time. Drop more $$ in to this thing or get rid of it. I dont like having a car note and I bet this thing would be worth next to nothign on a trade or direct sale.

Bad coil pack maybe? Fouled out plug? Start with the small things and go from there.

Thanks. I just had them replaced in January. (tensioners). Did a self test on the Coil Packs too. I am headed to the shop Friday and hoping for the best. Thanks for the responses.

Id probably guess 80% of the time the ford stealership will say "needs a new motor" becasue they can get away with it and they don't really know whats wrong but they know a new motor will fix it. I had a tapping sound coming out of a 05 fx4 I had...I could swear it was coming from inside the block. I got under the truck, under the hood trying to see where it was coming from. I took it to ford...they told me it was the cam phaser in the heads...anyone who has this year 150 with miles probably knows what that is. I didnt think it was that bassed on how it was acting. So they took the head to inspect and said nope thats not it...needs a new engine. I decided to not do that...was just going to drive it until it died. Went to another place and had the spark plugs changed and low and behold no more ticking. It was a spark plug that was kind of cross threaded or something and that tapping was gas escaping...plug was in the back so the sound would reflect downward off the cowl and sound like it was in the motor.

What kind of oil filter do you use? I had read that ones that used fram or maybe some others too would starve the motor for oil at start up becasue of there design. Not sure if it also made it run bad at idle too.

I kind of figured you had the tensioners done since you had the chain and all replaced already. Worn tensioners are very common on this truck so anyone doing the chains would do all that too.

Agree. I am not goign to take it to teh dealership for the work. I did some research and found a shop that comes highly recommended.

Pretty sure I used a Bosch oil filter the last change.

Yea not sure about the Bosch ones. The frams (and maybe others) would come apart or something like that and block oil passages causing noise and some oil pressure issues

Personally, I would have dumped that thing once I was quoted $2000 in repairs originally. Not familiar with Fords, but just based on the symptoms you're experiencing, I'd wager it's not worth the price or trouble to fix it.

Tending to agree with you Jordan. Just hate the thought of getting into another car note. If the new is that bad it may be time to bite the bullet. I wont be buying another Ford.

All depends on what you want...2k to fix or 2k down on a new truck and a note for the next 5 years. Jasper makes reman motors for that truck that are probably 3500...if the rest of the truck is in good shape it might be worth it to not have a 500$ note

I wouldn't let that stop you from buying Ford. 130,000 miles out of a full size truck is great. The older 5.4s did have their issues, the newer ones were reliable, but Ford now no longer makes them at all. I can assure you every single one of Ford's new truck engines are good and reliable as is the truck around it. I am a big time Dodge/Ram homer too, so take that for what it's worth.

Yeah, I agree. But he's already got 2k in it, a potential 3-4k more if a new motor is needed, plus when you get to 130,000+ miles other expensive things tend to start giving out like the trans or four wheel drive system components.
