Anyone familiar with the Uber App from the drivers perspective? Do the drivers get to "choose" which riders they pick up? If so, is this going to result in drivers refusing to pick up riders in bad parts of town?

If that is the case, which I am thinking it is, is it only a matter of time before NOLA Council latches onto this as a reason to restrict the service?

I was definitely thinking along those lines the other day. How long will it take for the first Uber driver to get robbed/killed?

I would imagine there are places the current cabs won't go?

Yes, I believe. I asked someone abotu it once and i THINK he said that when your request comes to their phone, they can see your rating (from drivers), history, etc. Then whichever driver in the area "picks" you will come get you. I think that's right but not positive.

Not sure why that would matter. The requester's card is already in teh system, it's not like the driver is gonna get stiffed on money.

The driver doesnt get paid in cash so they have very little on them. The only thing someone could take is the car... which is trackable.

The app will tell you which drivers are in the area however the driver has to physically "accept" your request before you are matched with him and guaranteed a ride.

Uber not picking you up is absolutely no change from the current system today, so how can they "latch" onto some artificial false claim?

The meeting today was pointless. Every anti-Uber argument was absolutely ignorant and unintelligent. Seriously, I wish I recorded the live feed because the stupidity displayed was a comedy you can't find on tv. It would make New Orleans a laughing stock of this nation.

Doesn't matter how false it is...they can still try and sell it as fact

In New Orleans? Within a week.

As someone mentioned, you rate drivers and they rate you. I talked to an Uber driver about it last week, and he was telling us what our ratings were and saying that is why we never have to wait very long for a pickup.

This. Don't you need to have a valid credit card with all supporting data to sign up? So, if a crime was committed, theoretically the police would have a great place to start. Not foolproof, but better than hailing a random can of the street who will more than likely have significantly more cash.
