Did any of you watch the Watergate hearings?

If so, can you believe the difference in those hearings and the IRS hearings?
I remember Republicans like Howard Baker and Lowell Weicker going after the truth of Watergate, party loyalty be damned.
In the IRS hearings every single Democrat is trying to protect Obama. They seem to have no interest whatsoever in finding out what actually happened. It's disgusting.

What is insulting to me is the pre-scripted talking points the dems are rolling out
They are getting their marching orders from someone. No way are their responses off the cuff or unplanned.

Can we at least get a better script writer for Cummings then? What was that horseshite last night.

This is how they've operated for a long time... it's just a lot easier to notice the talking points when the witness can't articulate an answer to any Republican question and then can knit a flag for the Dem question.
They've been doing this crap since at LEAST the confirmation hearings for the Wise Latina, who couldn't answer shite for Republicans but could answer the hell out of a Perry Mason question asked by Al fricking Franken.

What do you expect? The 2-party machine that our political system has spawned rewards loyalty to the party, consequences be damned!
I'm sure every single senator and congressman under the age of 50 has their eyes on some bigger prize. How they gonna get it if they ruffle the feathers of their own party?
Oh yeah, and for the most part, members of congress could care less about the country. They're self-interested human beings just like everyone else. They'll say what they need to say and do what they need to do in order to get votes. But after that? Simply the pursuit of their own desires.

That was 40 years ago. Unfortunately, a lot has changed since then politically.

Yep.
When I said "what do you expect?", it was more of a rhetorical question. Wasn't meant to be condescending.

Honestly, with all of the back and forth about the "lost" e-mails, can anyone say that if Lois Lerner directed the targeting of the Tea Party groups that she did this on her own? That she went rogue? Considering her extensive interaction with DOJ and the FBI, that she decided on her own to do this?
Really?
Not a conspiracy type, but this leads right back to White House. Someone had to provide direction and promise protection.

What I think happened is that after Citizens United, Democrats were pissed that they could no longer rule the day when it came to spending on campaigns. They dominate campaign spending through unions, and Citizens United allowed corporations and wealthy billionaires to jump into the field and diminish the power public sector unions and other democrat special interests held when it came to spending. This also coincided with the rise of the tea party and other grassroots organizations that helped defeat Democrats badly in 2010.
Upset about the landslide loss and unable to pass legislation to clamp down on campaign spending from non-democrat approved sources(i.e. Koch Brothers) the democrat leadership turned to the IRS to try and get them to shut down these groups instead.
Remember how mad Schumber, Durbin, etc. were in 2011 after the midterms? Whining about Citizens United and all of that? This definately was organized by the democrat leadership.

The difference is frightening. Forty years ago people were concerned about the truth and government over-reach. Even if the politician was protecting his or her own interests at the time there was some honor among thieves.
Today, there is no honor among thieves. It's disgusting to watch these bastards shite all over everything. They have no shame.
There is more truth in professional wrestling (and better acting).

This is one reason I prefer the Republican Party; they are not totally partisan/lock-step in their party loyalty regardless of integrity. The big difference is how the 2 parties respond to controversy/scandal. Dems tend to circle the wagons and support their comrade under siege. Pubs are much more quick to accept the facts and condemn, fire, throw under the bus, etc. party members who are clearly in the wrong.

Same thing happened with Clinton, the Demarcates are nothing but whores.

Some of my earliest memories, at least politically, are the Watergate hearings.
Well, that era is dead, period. Clinton ended all of that.

As a former registered Dem and current Indy, I agree with this statement.
See the Tea Party (don't agree with them, but a great example) and Bush's 43 constant bashing from the right.
Dems will never do that. Ever. But they expect the other side to do it.

No, they didn't. There was still rule of law back then.
