Preparing (in 2-3 yrs) to buy a lot and build...best practices?

I am planning to purchase land (.75-1 acre) in 2016 (in a subdivision) and build a home in Louisiana around 2017. I think I can handle buying/financing the land, but in terms of selecting a contractor to build, can the MT gods provide any insight or resources on best practices regarding this process, considering the timeline if necessary?
If more info is needed, let me know.
Also, I am acquaintances with a couple contractors/architects, but am pretty much an outsider so at present so I do not have an established relationship with anyone who would build a house and have any guilt if the job was not done right....

Make sure whoever you choose has solid references and never pay the final installment unless ALL the work is completed.

Spend time on plans. The more detailed your plans are, the better shot you've got at having a good experience with your contractor.
