FBI sting

quote:

The FBI has rescued 168 children — the youngest 11 years old, and some of them never reported missing — in a coast-to-coast crackdown on sex traffickers, officials said Monday.

"These are America's children," said FBI Director James Comey.

The week-long operation, called "Cross County VIII," resulted in the arrest of 281 pimps who recruited minors off street corners and online.

So, I wonder what the charge/punishment is for these "pimps"?

Does that mean that the parent(s) possibly sold them?

I don't get it. We rescue children from being forced into prostitution (as we should), but if the prostitute is say 20, we arrest her and put her through the criminal justice system.

They probably go after street kids, runaways, orphans, etc exactly for that reason

The article says than many were a part of the child welfare system, so I think it would be feasible to believe that foster parents could have sold them. To put it mildly, many foster parents don't do it for the right reasons.

If the youngest is eleven then the majority are teenagers who the parents may have thought ran away and were not worried about getting them back. There are horrible parents in this world.

I deal with these cases, and you are spot on. The 20 year old prostitute, especially those not native to this country, were trafficked at such a young age. They go from victim to criminal just like that. Luckily, there are federal provisions that can provide protection, but many states are playing catchup.

We have a foster kid down the street from us. Sweet kid, but has no guidance in life. Parents don't give two shits what she does.

That doesn't really add up. I'm interested to hear an actual lawyer's opinion on this. Seems like it's going to be really hard to make these charges stick. Unless they have audio/video on each individual telling someone who's underage what to do then they will be out in no time. There's undercover shows about this all the time and mostly the 'pimps' are just older prostitutes whose defense is they are simply charging otherwise homeless girls for a place to stay.

I imagine these transactions involve a lot of indirect "purchasing" when selling the children.

They're probably calling the buyer and seller both pimps.

281/2 = 140.5 transactions

That's what I was alluding to. If you're involved, you're a pimp, no matter how small your role is. Whether you're driving the truck or actually taking the children, you're a pimp.

In my experience as a teacher, I can say that the vast majority of foster children that I've come into contact with are just starving for any form of love or attention that they can get. It is truly sad. Most are simply a check for their foster parents.
