Could go on the Rant, but since recruits read this board often I figured it should go here.
Not only does this speak volumes on recruiting, but the quality of the coaching staff as well and the way they develop players and get them ready to play at a high level early in their college careers.

Les Miles has never been afraid to play a true freshman --LSU’s sports information department reports that the Tigers have played 87 first-year freshmen in Miles’ nine seasons -- but it has become one of the program’s trademarks only in recent years.
The Tigers ranked among the nation’s top-five programs at playing freshmen in each of the last two seasons -- 14 freshmen in 2013 (third) and 15 in 2012 (fifth) -- and Miles has all but guaranteed at least 15 more will see the field this fall once a star-studded recruiting class arrives on campus.

I think kids like that about LSU,” offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said. “They like our style, they like Coach Miles’ philosophy that young guys are going to play early, which we do. I think we’ve averaged maybe ... at least 15 freshmen a year playing.

“You can’t guarantee a guy he’s going to play, but if he knows he’s given the opportunity and he’s got confidence in his ability, the track record speaks for itself. Come in and help us win and here’s the key thing, I think, that I’ve learned since being here is our veteran players -- our juniors and sophomores and redshirt sophomores and so forth -- they expect young guys to come help them play. They’re not afraid of young guys coming in and playing with them.”

No program has had more players enter the draft early in the last couple seasons than LSU, and those departures created holes that talented freshmen could fill.

it's interesting seeing the evolution of that change as well -- if 15 more play next fall then the average for Miles is ~10 over his time here and ~15 in the past 3 years. he's been playing young guys more regularly lately
and he's been doing it because we've been sending more underclassmen to the NFL
LSU's a pipeline to the NFL for sure now; always have been during the 2000s, but it's on another level these days. past two years we've had 9 guys drafted and 15 freshmen playing. if you're good, you WILL play here and you WILL go on to the NFL, bottom line

I like the concept of it. It's a Win-Win.
On one hand, it keeps the competition at an all time high in practice for playing time, get the younger guys quality playing time that way when an upper classman leaves, experience isn't a problem and good depth is always a plus.
While on the other hand, it's a major recruiting tool. Guys want to play early, they want academic success and want a path to the NFL. LSU is one of the hottest schools out there right now.

I think that this is great and I laud the coaching staff.
I just wish that there was more of a happy medium. If we are sending the most guys to the NFL and we have true freshmen playing all over the field, that is great. But, the downside is a 10-3 season every year, whereas, if we had more guys staying and more experienced players and depth, we are looking at 12-1 and/or national championships.
Again, I am not criticizing the coaches. It is what it is and it is almost impossible to strike that balance. I am just saying what I wish.

Unfortunately it's difficult to tell any player that they should skip going to make money to stay in school. I can't say I blame the coaches for this. I'd rather them continue to recruit studs who leave in 3 years than middle of the road guys who stay 4.

Let me guess, there is another school that has played 88 tr fr during that same period....

Oh, I agree. There is not much the coaching staff can do and I definitely do not blame them. These guys worked hard in high school, are highly recruited, have busted their tail in college, play at the top level of college ball, and see their friends go to the NFL every year. When they are here for 3 years and have been playing the whole time, they weigh the risk/reward and they make the decision that most of us would make considering what an injury would do to them.
I am just talking about how good this program would be if these guys were staying another year.

Can't be true. Rant dogma says that Miles only plays seniors.

I'm sure there is. It says we are top 5 in the last 2 years.. if we were #1 im sure that's what would've been posted

ehh... this was actually not inaccurate earlier in miles's career. the numbers here prove it, he's played an avg of 15 freshmen/yr the past few seasons, but only 87 over 9. logically that means he was averaging much lower #s before the past few years
and it's a feedback loop anyway, so it's not even a knock. it took the cupboard getting unusually thin in 08/09 followed by some amazing classes in 09 and 10 to get the ball rolling, and now that it's rolling, with elite classes every year and record-breaking #s of draftees, it's only going to continue
and to the poster upthread saying 10-3 every year, nah. look at 10-12 for examples of how it works at its best -- you get some guys that blow up in their first or second years and that gives you 1-2 years of experienced, talented, star players before they go pro, and that's where your up years come from
last year was a "down" year with a lot of freshmen playing, and we went 10-3. i think that's closer to the floor than the ceiling
this year, might be kinda "down" too, because of the same reason -- lost a lot of starters and all on one side of the ball.
but next year? we've got a ton of returning guys lined up

Dat OL doe. We will lose the entire OL next year. This season, Bama is at home and with new QB and young DBs. A&M has new qb too and defense should be shite again. Our team may be better next year (besides the OL) but the outside factors favor this year.
