A question about Seinfeld

For those of you that watched it as it aired, did you know at the time that it would a GOAT show? I didn't get into it until after it finished and went back and watched it all in DVD.

I knew it was the greatest comedy at the time. I was like 10 though, so I couldn't fully appreciate it.

What's that?
Like an mp3 or something?

Kind of - NBC had an outstanding run there - props must go to Cheers, who sort of led the charge, followed quickly by Cosby - and you had a solid run - for years of "must see" NBC Thursdays. Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers and Night Court (a semi-spinoff of Cheers), finishing with Hill Street Blues - that lineup ran for several years - and Cosby and Cheers held their hour leads for 8 and 9 straight Fall seasons, respectively, and Cheers handed the 9:00 p.m. (8 central) Thursday spot directly to Seinfeld for the 1995 season - honestly, I probably didn't start watching it until they started rerunning it after Cheers and then took Cheers' spot.
But, I got the humor - I had always enjoyed Jerry's stand-up and had been a fan of JLD when she was on SNL. It is one of those shows that slowly built and after 3 or 4 seasons, you realized how good it was.

Yeah. It was hugely popular it's last 4-5 seasons.

It was definately ground breaking at the time

Seinfeld started right after the Cosby Show so it had a great slot to start. I thought the first 2 seasons were meh but the concept was cool. It just got better and better. Seems like it took a small hit when LD left, but came back.

Didn't he leave during that horrible scat singing season?

That's not right - Seinfeld and Cosby were never paired together, nor on the same night during the regular Fall schedule. Seinfeld was on Wednesdays, mainly, in the second hour of primetime until it's 4th season, when it flipped to Thursday, and finally took Cheers' spot at 9:00, Thursday, for the remainder of its run. By the time Seinfeld moved to Thursday, Cosby was done.

First, it was originally called the Seinfeld Chronicles. I remember I thought it looked stupid. I don't think I watched until the summer repeats or maybe if NBC did a special repeat since season 1 was so small.
I remember a commercial with this picture and it really looked stupid.
However, from episode one, I loved the show when I finally gave it a try.

Loved it from the start. Seinfeld was the best thing on Letterman and Carson. I thought it would have a following but never thought it would have that broad an appeal.

I was like 10 when the finale aired and I remember it was the biggest tv event in my lifetime. It was a huge deal the last few seasons.

Not for the first season or two. After that, yeah.

You sure Ace? I can swear Seinfeld premiered following the Cosby Show. That's going on memory though

Dude. I had no idea Seinfeld began that early or Cosby ran that long.

Yes. Never paired with Cosby - never even on the same regular Fall schedule, although Seinfeld ran in the Spring of 1991 after Cheers, with Cosby at 8 (7 central).

I'd probably be ostracized by other Seinfeld fans but I didn't think the show got worse when LD left. It became more Seinfeld-ish, completely meta, nothing held back. It was a pretty solid evolution of an already great show.

Yeah I guess I just remember them being together on the same night at some point. I do remember the actual pilot of Seinfeld and just thought I was watching Cosby when I saw it. Probably was Cheers, since I watched it more anyway.

Same here. I was around the same age, and I gathered with my family to watch it.
I remember jokes going over my head for some of the episodes at the time (I yada yada yadad sex.)
