Falcons acquired QB T.J. Yates from the Texans in exchange for ILB Akeem Dent. On Tuesday, it was reported that Yates had been cut by the Texans. A source informed Profootballtalk that once word got out around the league that the Texans were planning to waive Yates, teams started calling about a trade. In Atlanta, Yates should have the clear edge over Dominique Davis for No. 2 duties behind Matt Ryan. Also in the mix at quarterback for the Falcons are Sean Renfree and Jeff Matthews. Yates, 27, has a 2-3 career record and led the Texans to the franchise's first playoff victory in 2011. He has as many postseason wins as Ryan.

Don't say I never gave you guys anything

Matty Ice and his wonderful 1-4 career Playoff record.

Elite QB.

Thanks, nice find.

Just looking at the thread over on falconslife, they're thrilled about it, which I don't understand at all.

You lose Spoon, haven't signed anyone to replace him, and then you trade a starting linebacker (I realize he may not be starting anymore, but he has experience and it's depth) for a guy that'll never see the field?

I love the ATL FO.

It's a good move. Akeem Dent was getting buried in the depth chart even by rookies so far. Our backup QBs have been pretty bad, so... yea.

Although, if Ryan goes down, the season is over anyway. But not according to some of the dumb's here since they think he sucks. Guess we'll make him our starting QB!

Fans always try to rationalize. However, I would think Dent would see the field much more than Yates.

That's pretty much my thinking too. Why would you trade a player that would play (even if it's just special teams) for someone that won't?

Ryan is by no means elite right now, but he's as deadly as anyone with time in the pocket. I think he'll get better in big games, but with Mike Smith at the helm and the yahoos making these kinds of decisions in the Falcons FO he won't see another big game.

(Unless you count playing New Orleans at home in your losing seasons as your Super Bowl).

Maybe it's a sign that the coaching staff didn't think Dent was going to play? Even on special teams.

Yeah, maybe. That's quite a fall for him. Either way, you guys are really green at ILB now.

I just heard on ESPN that the Saints were also interested in Yates. Wow.

Yes, very. Funny that I didn't consider LB a "weak" spot this time last year. Then you have your D leader get seriously injured 2x within a span of 14 months and uhhh... yea.

Injuries suck.

It isn't a rationalizing, Dent wasn't going to make the final roster.
He should have never been considered as a replacement for letting he who shall not be named either.

ETA: Falcons also just picked up Dobbins from the Texans also.

It might turn out better in the long run. I know we had quite the youth movement last year on defense (due in large part to injuries), and it really injected some life into it.
