WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is looking to create the largest marine preserve in the world in the Pacific Ocean.

The White House says Obama wants to protect a massive stretch of ocean from drilling, fishing and other actions that could threaten wildlife. He's considering expanding protected waters that surround a group of mostly uninhabited islands the U.S. controls near Hawaii and American Samoa.

Obama will announce the executive action Tuesday. But the White House says it will listen to public input and is still finalizing the sanctuary's boundaries.

Obama also plans to create a program to address prohibited fish and seafood trade. The actions were first reported by The Washington Post.

The expansion comes as Obama is seeking ways to protect climate and the environmental despite opposition in Congress.

There's that word "expansion" again.

From the article-

quote:

The designation would include waters up to 200 nautical miles offshore from the territories.

Pretty sure the territorial limits are about 50 miles in any direction from land we control at most, not 200.

It's very similar to what Clinton did in the run-up to the 1996 election, declaring a national monument area in parts of Utah in an attempt to get Arizona to vote for him while screwing Utah, which wasn't going to do so.

The additional effect was to prevent companies from mining coal or some other resource in that area, IIRC, which was a big boon to his donors from China who got to cut out a lot of competition thanks to them getting blocked.

I'd want to drill down a little more and figure out what's going on and why before getting too angry.

For all I know, this is him fricking with Starkist et all who run a bunch of plants in the Marianas and American Samoa canning tuna.

Knowing the stupidity of pencil pushers and watching what has happened with red snapper season. Yea, I'd think people should be leery of what will happen.

For a commercial fisherman having to travel over 400 miles just to go catch a day's worth of seafood I can see where they might be upset. You don't?

You have to remember most of this crowd cheered the killing of bin laden while giving the proverbial double bird to the commander in chief. Because reasons.

Is that what's happening?

Are commercial loggers, hunters, and trappers unjustly harmed due to federal land preserves?

I mean, I'm sure the plan will be poorly executed but I need more information before I shake my fist.
