First, I read a ton about how Ghana is a physical team back lacks skill and discipline. Well shite, they seemed to be very disciplined to me. Their passes were crisp and on target all night. And their crosses were on point a good portion of the night as well.

Was that due to them playing over their heads or did we have subpar defense? I know they only had one goal but they Ghana seemed to be playing in so much space.

And...how much room does this team have to improve? I don't know much about the other two teams other than they're pretty damn good. Would they have waxed us tonight?

Everything about what we did tonight after the first minute was sub par.

Ghana definitely has technical skills, but we played like shite. We bunkered down and had trouble playing through the midfield, and once we lost Jozy, we had no outlet, so we were hemmed into our half most of the game.

Germany would have waxed us. Portugal...who knows. If we stop CR we can come away with a point.

Our defense was likely a weak spot coming in but they did well. We have a great goal keeper in Howard. The US always tends to have good keepers.

Our midfield play was just very poor today. And Aron's game isn't suited for how Jk approached the tactics today since he had to enter for Jozy.

Scoring so quickly kind of played against us. It seemed we bunkered down immediately and that always leads to disaster. We just got lucky with a moment of brilliance from Zussi and Brooks.

Aron needs a guy to run off of. He's at his best when there's a guy like Altidore up top with him.

Our defense today was very good, especially on the right side of the field. Unfortunately, everything else was problematic. Too much kick and run, too many turnovers, and uncharacteristic bad play from our most consistent player (Bradley).

I thought Ghana's crosses were generally sub-par. It was the one time I felt comfortable when they attacked. Our taller defenders won the balls they should have.

Our team has a lot of room to improve. Basically, we need to figure out how to move the ball from the defense to attack, without relying on Jozy's strength. I bet Jozy is done for the next 3 games. So we will likely have Aron Johannson in his place. Very different type of player. Either Dempsey will have to come back and work as a playmaker (tough if he can't breathe through his nose) or Bradley has to be a much better offensive player the rest of the way.

In a short tournament like this, it's not about "improving", but rather having good effort and tactics for each game. Even in 2002, our biggest World Cup success, we didn't bring effort or tactics to the Poland game and lost 3-1. We came back and beat Mexico in the next game not because we improved but because we came to play in that one. With that said, every team has their baseline; Brazil can still play bad games and win or Iran can play good games and lose.

I wonder if we see Mix in the Portugal game to help with possession.

As well as Beckerman played, it's hard to take him off, but we can't hoof it to Johansson like he is Jozy.

I'd start Beckerman but I would use Mix as the number one sub if we aren't playing well (and if Bradley sucks again, I'd sub him out instead of Beckerman and Jones, assuming they have good games).

I was hoping Dempsey would drop deeper pretty much all night. We needed another outlet.

Bradley has to be better.

It's really quite shocking that we could play poorly and beat Ghana. They are a legit team. We have room to improve and we will need to improve to get a point off of Portugal.

Read about Bradley too. What does he usually do differently in the midfield and how would it have helped tonight?

I understand the defense now. It's tough on defense(any sport) to be in position and play the way you want when there are so many turnovers.

Yeah, I thought Ghana were lot more threatening when they began to play more through K Asamoah than hitting in crosses from their left flank.

We did a pretty decent job on Kwadwo Asamoah for most of the match (mainly through Bedoya working his arse off).

He did finally get loose a few times (one which resulted in Ghana's goal), but overall we kept him in check but giving him so much attention also wasn't helping us get out when we won the ball.

Honestly, Bradley usually does all the things Jones did today, plus a couple of good passes. I have no idea what happened today. Fortunately Jones had the best game of his US career, and Beckerman was better than usual.

Also, Bedoya ran his arse off.

Ok, how about this? If we insist on playing a diamond 4-4-2 (which I hope we don't), who do we play?

Same back four probably, and just see if it's Brooks or Besler who's healthy.

But do we pair Dempsey and Johannsson up top? What about Wondo? Would be nice if we had Landon right now.

Got to be Dempsey and Johansson up top. I see no other possibility, but I also think three of our offensively oriented players are trash and wouldn't give them the time of day if I was the manager.

I can't imagine we will use a diamond against Portugal or Germany though. I think it will be similar to today, just more coming back for Dempsey.
