Phone for a 9 year old

My 9 year old is going on a 10 day trip with some relatives and I'd like to get him a cheap temporary phone just so we can stay in touch. I have 2 iphone 4's that are AT&T phones. Is it possible that I bring it to walmart and get one of the "pay by the minute" type plans instead of getting a cheap go-phone or something?

StraightTalk lets you take an iphone to them. All you need to do is buy a $15 sim card and purchase a $45 prepaid plan.
