How many stars would we have on our jersey if we actually cared?

With the sheer number of athletes we produce ? I am not saying that Lebron or Megatron would be superstars. Maybe it is some D2 PG that would be our Messi. If we have had the proper development program, I see no reason we would not have 6 or 7 stars on our jersey by now.

I think this is a rather valid question. I mean in almost every other major sport, the best athletes regardless of country of origin come to the United States to train.

I doubt we invented track and field. Or any winter sports.

If we REALLY cared we would have won every single World Cup by now. Half caring, probably 10-12.

No other country in the world can produce anything close to the type of athlete we have in the States. You might not get a lot of love from the guys around here because of how many times this thread topic has been discussed, but I completely agree. It's a shame that more of our best young athletes play other sports, namely football and basketball. The tide is slowly turning, but we're probably still a long way away.

Eh, I was thinking more along the lines of ball related sports.

Rugby and Aussie-rules players train in the US?

FWIW, I kind of agree. Due to our sheer population and number of kids that take part in sports when they're younger, sure we could be more successful if we had better academies and training facilities.

And I think that's what people have started to recognize and why Klinsmann was a good hire because he will help us further improve our youth setup. But with that said, soccer's always going to have a hard time pulling the top athletes due to the number of other sports that are so popular here. Soccer's definitely growing, and one day down the line, why couldn't it potentially be up there with the likes of football? But we still have a long way to go, and at least we're headed in the right direction.

Klinsmann has been excellent for the youth setup, recruiting, and planning for the future. I would love to see him become a technical director after this cycle and have Tab Ramos take over. His teams play incredible soccer.

Would fap, but Klinsmann's the guy until 2018. Now after that point if he continued on as technical director, I would be ok with that. But Tab is already on the coaching staff so i think we're in good hands.

How long do you guys think it will take for MLS/American teams to have youth academies/setup on par with those in Europe?

A long time. Our academy system is not very old, and we can't afford the type of coaches that say, Ajax or Barca employs.
