I'm not trying to be a dickhead, but what value to elephants provide to the world other than a novelty item?
The only thing I can think of are piano keys from their tusks which we all seem to disagree with.
Nobody seems to have a problem with going to bring the kids to the zoo to watch elephants in captivity or at the circus.

Actually this is what happens when a weak public entity has stewardship over something.
If the elephants were owned by someone, they would be protected and sustained. As they are this nebulous, publicly held "natural resource" is simply too tempting a target for poachers.
I hate it because, eventually, there will be no wild elephants, lions or tigers. And that truly will be a shame.

You're right, what real difference does it make that they exist to those that have no direct contact with elephants. But the truth is that it's sad and pathetic that humans would rather annihilate a species for brief riches than enjoy them and perhaps farm them with enough of a population. frick these people and those with the mindset that who cares bc it doesn't affect you. It does and it will affect us soon enough.

even if elephants went extinct, what harm would there be? it's not like they play a vital role in nature. there would be no catastrophe if there were no wild elephants.
