oh so as a chemist you're using all sorts of chemicals that hurt the earth and using plastic (oil) products that were produced through a dirty process and prob responsible for the extinction of many species known and unknown.
just love laughing at the false outrage when everyone here is guilty of being a part of a culture that already pillages and systemically rapes the earth's natural resources. but when some Africans kill 68 elephants, perfect opportunity to stand above and condemn becuase that makes you feel better about yourself.

Can you show us where the elephant touched you?

Not sure about elephants, but rhinos could be raised and harvest the horn for commercial sell but humans made laws against it so the only way to get rhino horn is to kill one. also If you could sell the confiscated ones it would drive black market price down and deter poaching.
sometimes human rules are part of the problem.

Meh, they're animals. I'm more concerned about the little girls who were sold into slavery in Africa.

I'm all for trial and error.

Yeah it's the fact that they just chop off the faces for the tusks and collect other organs that they know they can sell on the black market.
Then leave the rest of the body there. It's not like they are using the meat to feed their families or anything. The just want the organs the Asian black market is willing to pay top dollar for.
I've talked to people in Kenya while I was there. Elephants can be destructive as hell. Many villagers don't like them because of that. They eat a plant that basically makes them drunk and they will destroy a village in their drunken rampage.
If there was a serious elephant overpopulation then I could see allowing so many to be hunted.

yes it can
which makes affluent Americans condemning Africans for killing some elephants seem very hypocritical. why do most people judge and condemn? it's an inner need to feel better about the evils they commit yet are too afraid to realize.

Elephants are much, much rarer.

well i can agree with that last thought, but I dont agree with killing of animals simply for the tusks or the hide on their back, esp when the species is in danger of survival. with that being said I admit I dont know the number of elephants alive today.
how do you feel about rainforest deforestation to make more farmland?
edit phone sucks

Americans get all upset when a lot of pretty exotic animals get killed, but how many thousands of turkey, deer, hogs etc get killed in the US each year? What is the difference? Is it just because they left a mess behind instead of bringing them somewhere, taking what they want, then disposing of the remains like we do?

They are killed for meat and not just for a single body part.

Did I really just see someone compare killing elephants to mining for oil?
wow
One is on a list of endangered species, the others (mainly turkey) are bred specifically for food.
Also if you wanted to continue playing devils advocate, doctors are going against nature and natural selection, by helping more people live and people live longer they are contributing to the over population of the world and putting a strain on many countries infrastructure as the number of elderly people needing care, alot of which is government funded which takes away money from other important sectors such as education and policing. We have an ageing population and it is one of the biggest problems facing governments in the coming generations as the number of people working to retired people ratio decreases.
I dont believe this btw.

Elephants are very intelligent animals. They rank up there with dolphins and primates.
quote:
The elephant has one of the most closely knit societies of any living species. Elephant families can only be separated by death or capture. Cynthia Moss, an ethologist specialising in elephants, recalls an event involving a family of African elephants. Two members of the family were shot by poachers, who were subsequently chased off by the remaining elephants. Although one of the elephants died, the other, named Tina, remained standing, but with knees beginning to give way. Two family members, Trista and Teresia (Tina's mother), walked to both sides of Tina and leaned in to hold her up. Eventually, Tina grew so weak, she fell to the ground and died. However, Trista and Teresia did not give up but continually tried to lift her. They managed to get Tina into a sitting position, but her body was lifeless and fell to the ground again. As the other elephant family members became more intensely involved in the aid, they tried to put grass into Tina's mouth. Teresia then put her tusks beneath Tina's head and front quarters and proceeded to lift her. As she did so, her right tusk broke completely off, right up to the lip and nerve cavity. The elephants gave up trying to lift Tina but did not leave her; instead, they began to bury her in a shallow grave and throw leaves over her body. They stood over Tina for the night and then began to leave in the morning. The last to leave was Teresia.

If things here got as bad as they are in the Congo I would be fine with it. You have been to Africa, you know the difference Nurse!
