What's a good gift for a newborn?

My best buddy, he'd be my brother if I had one, had his first child this morning, a little girl. I love that's she was born on Friday the 13th, that will be a full moon. My niece was born on 6/6/06 so we'll have little demon girls to joke about.
I'm getting them a car load of diapers from Sam's, some cutesy girlie toys for the baby of course. I was also thinking about helping them start a Roth IRA for the kiddo.
The rules have changed a bit the last few years, this Coverdell Education Savings Account is basically what the Roth for Education IRA was.
I told him that starting now, putting only $38 per week into it would yield a return of almost $80K when she turns 18 and it's time to go to college. There's no telling how screwed up the country will be in 18 years and it's never too early to start planning for your kid's education.
I'm putting the first $1,000 into it. Is this a little too presumptuous that I don't think him and his fiance have the financial planning skills they'll need to be prepared 15 years from now?

This seems like a not so subtle brag

My parents and grandparents got me bonds. Wish those mother frickers would have put in more.
I got like 150 from a 5 dollar investment in 1990

I would Let people handle their own finances, that could be taken as offensive for you to offer that. I don't have poor friends though so what do I know

Bought each of mine a share of Disney stock.
It came in a nice little frame
Probably won't increase much, but that's not why I bought it

I think you're overstepping. Not trying to flame here.... Just giving my opinion. Diapers are great, as are the girly outfits.

Yeah I could see a grandparent giving this. But a close friend? Seems a bit much.
But wow at the OP being so generous though.

If it was me, I would put 1k in a stock you know will be around for a while. Giving the 38 dollar lecture sounds :/

Are you asking or just telling everyone what you have already decided on giving them?

Pretty certain that's impossible

Diapers, more diapers, wet wipe warmer or more diapers. I've got a 1 month old and diapers are the biggest thing. We got a shite ton from people but they are all one size.
