A lot of folks on this board (especially the older ones) have told us that they grew up poor and in poverty, on certain government programs, but that their parents worked hard, etc. When you guys judge the people on assistance now, why are they "different" than your family was? Also, do you guys assume that you could have survived without the help of government, to try to hide the "shame" of being a recipient of tax payer dollars as a child?

I'm just interesting in the thought process. If you grew up poor with hard working parents who used some state help, how do you reconcile those memories with your current distrust of the great society? What is the thought process there?

There are reasons why society is the way it is

A thinker would focus on that why.

This thread isn't an exercise in discovering the why.

We had NO state help. So I don't know how to answer your question.

Why'd you say you don't know how to answer the question?

Obviously the question doesn't apply to you, so there should be nothing puzzling about how to answer it.

I support government assistance for those in need.

I would think they'd view it much as affirmative action. A safety net granting an opportunity.

Different levels of poverty, then and now. Different levels of assistance programs, then and now.

This, but it should be as restrictive as can be. It also should be so restrictive and shameful, that you want to get off ASAP.

The government should ALWAYS have a safety net in place to assist those in need. And of course, try and address the causes of poverty as well.

Why shameful? I don't get that part. I would venture a guess and say that most of the poor would rather not be poor and be able to provide for themselves without any assistance at all.

I don't know if you would call is poor growing up, but my dad died when I was ten and we received his SS check until I graduated HS. I don't think it is hypocritically to have received a gubment check and be against government programs. My dad did pay his SS taxes for 30 years before he died, why shouldn't his kids have got the check?

Not bullshite, but hey if it makes it easier for you to make an argument by calling me a liar, go for it.

Go to St. Joe, Newellton, Tallualah, LP, then come back and talk. All the ppl (nonseniors and legit disabled) both black and white don't want off the system. They have gotten used to being poor and have realized that you can live a damn comfortable life sucking on the system and bouncing from min wage job to min wage job.

Arguing that anyone who grew up dirt poor got some state assistance doesn't require much help. It's naturally easy.
