After I pulled over I rolled the window down, turned off the car, put keys on the dash, got my paperwork out, and put my hands on the wheel. He asked if I saw the speed limit, and I said I did albeit too late and I was probably going about 55 (this was a 45 zone). He said he clocked me at 57. He also pointed out that my drivers license address is not my correct address (I told him I had moved a few months ago) and I needed to get that changed to my current residence. After he was in his car for a while running my license, he comes back and hands me my license and a warning "because I was so cooperative".

Of course, that won't make national headline news, so just wanted to point that out. Also reinforces what I and the overwhelming minority on here have said repeatedly. Don't be confrontational, make them as non-threatened as possible, and you're on your way. Yet people on here call that "being trampled on" or being a submissive pansy or whatever.

Prepare for a lot of "I bet you're white" comments.

ETA: And your situation is a little different than a cop just demanding to see some ID randomly on the street (whereas you had actually broken the law). But for the most part, I agree with you.

Was your dog in the trunk? If so, good thinking.

I'm always polite with my info ready and I have always been let off with a warning. I've been lucky so far.

No dogs were shot, no drugs were searched for, no mics were checked, no rights trampled on.

Just a nice interaction and a few minute delay of my day.

Certainly...but I can say that in my entire time on earth that's never happened to me before. Most likely because I've never been doing anything to warrant unwanted attention in that way.

I am in the middle on this issue as far as the OT stands. I have zero issue being polite and non-confrontational ( which is what you did ). I would expect the same from the officer. I figure the rules of polite society apply. Treat them like you would want to be treated.

BUT...

The gloves come off when they start being a dick. Which is what I think many people on here are talking about. I know my rights and am not going to stand for being unreasonably ordered around, detained without cause or searched without some reason. I don't think any aspect of that belief is in conflict with what you did. Good on you for being reasonable, good on him for being reasonable.

I'm usually cooperative, but this seems like a bit much.

Baaaaaaaaad example. You were clearly speeding, and he had every reason to pull you over. You were polite, he was friendly and gave you a warning. Everybody goes home happy.

He also didn't try to get your consent to waive your rights, or attempt to just straight up disregard your rights.

Has anyone taken the position that complying with an officer's request for ID at a traffic stop is letting the officer trample over your rights?

And in all honesty, being white helps with that as well. It's never happened to me either, but I don't "look suspicious" usually (which is one thing people have a problem with in those situations).

That as well. He seemed just like a normal, regular dude just doing his job. I'm sure some officers are complete jerks (just like some people in every profession on the face of the earth are as well) and that leaves a bad taste in people's mouths.
