overall i enjoyed it, although it didn't have enough Godzilla action for me, too much screen time of the muto's. a lot of people have complained about the massive plot holes and cheesy human character story lines. it was still a vast improvement over the 1998 film.

my question is 2 parts, a. why didn't they do a batman begins style godzilla (dark, zero campiness, godzilla as the only monster and bad guy, basically a remake/modernization of the original 1954 movie)? and b. how would you have felt about that, would you have preferred it to the version we got?

Isn't that basically what they tried to do in 98?

That's pretty much what they tried to do with the 98 movie, and it sucked. They probably could have done a better job of trying for that, but Godzilla is best as fun camp imo.

The only thing that was wrong with this last Godzilla was that it was too much attempt at having a developed storyline and not enough campy fun monster battles. They should go more towards that direction rather than trying to make it more realistic or modern.

I enjoyed Godzilla being the good guy and fighting the Mutos

more monsters is always better IMO

well godzilla was the only monster, but the movie was still cheesy. look at the difference between tim burton's batman and batman begins. not to mention they completely butchered godzilla in that movie.

I'm just saying they tried to make it serious, with him as the lone bad guy, and it sucked

It's a lot easier to make Batman less cheesy than it is to make a movie about big monsters destroying cities serious

how would y'all feel about a remake of the original american version of the movie then, set in 1950s japan and being told from perspective of an american reporter?

Not sure where you get campiness in the new one. Compared to any of the Japanese Zillas it has 0% campiness.

People on here complained about too much action in Superman and now are complaining about not enough action.

The action we got was top notch. I would assume anymore would have put the movie way past the budget.

Not to mention, what else was needed? Did you want 20 minutes of them doing the same thing over and over?

Plot holes? It is a giant monster movie. Sure one could complain that it was impossible for them to know which nuclear site would attract the mutos and even more ridiculous to think 2 missiles would attract all 3 monsters in a country full of missiles, nuclear power plants and nuclear dump sites.

Heck one could even complain that it made no sense for the Vegas muto to leave the massive waste site. Pretty much all 3 should have converged on that site except that didn't fit in with the boring military guy plot.

Hmmm.....I seem to be going off on a tangent.

I liked the movie, sure it could have used more Zilla and Cranston and a whole lot less of the son and his family.

Since you got me started, I still think the little kid on the train should have slid out. Hated that Disneyfied sequence especially with his parents finding him so quickly. A muto should have eaten them as they drove off after being reunited.

Here's where I throw out (as usual) that I actually liked the 1998 Gojira remake.
