I've been trying to figure out, since the 10 year anniversary just passed and the introduction of the chronological torrent file you can watch, what made "Lost" so captivating.

Yes, the character development and story lines were awesome, and while the plot got weird at times a lot of things were explained.

What I think made it so intriguing was the island, and the fact that it felt like you were there with them. Like you were stranded on the island with them and trying to help discover a way off.

This is why I'm looking forward to "The Last Ship", as it has that same sort of "stranded", helpless feeling to it.

Just a thought. Probably way off.

Good character development.

Exceptional score. I don't think the score gets nearly the credit deserved but a great score can truly elevate a movie or show.

Compelling Villain.

Unpredictable. You never had much of a clue what the hell was going on, which was great.

Should have added that. Yes it was incredible.

every character had a story and many of the characters stories intertwined

that made it compelling

the overall story had many plot holes that I can pretty much ignore because of how interesting the relationships were

Beside some reasons already mentioned, the characters were unique and diverse basically covering every personality type.

This allowed for any given person to heavily invest in at least one character. Once they were invested two things happened:

1. Their stories intertwined leading the viewer to become more invested
2. The characters' back stories led the viewer to see other characters were really different than initially supposed...often times shifting those characters into the very type the viewer identifies. This made the viewer invest in more characters.

The story was just the vehicle for all this to happen. Think about what the finale REALLY focused on....character conclusions and relationships. That's what Lost was all about.

Alone we are all Lost, until we find relationships and really discover ourselves.

About the only tv show ever that I often listen to the score on the old youtube.

Dynamite drop-in.

I think one of the main reasons was talking about it with other fans. One of the few shows I would regularly hang out with friends to watch.

the mystery

and then when that fell apart, the standard "character development/storylines" became the go-to argument

it's like when a soccer team buys a striker and he sucks...before fans give up, he'll be called a "great target man"

I think lost was just unlike anything we'd ever seen before. It was twin peaks, x files, twilight zone and castaway all rolled into one beautifully packaged product.
Ultimately the scope became a little to big for itself at times but it is still by far my favorite show. Here's why:

In a time where everyone was dumbing down television Lost flipped the world upside down. Deep characters whose past, present and future all intertwined like a giant spider web forced viewers to really pay attention and thus becoming invested in characters they related to.

The many mysteries of the show. Between the crash, smoke monster, the hatch, the others, polar bears, dharma, Jacob/mib, whispers, Hurley bird, the statue, the numbers and just the island itself, there was always something to keep everybody guessing. Some (like myself) feel they explained too much and others too little. Either way, people really cared.

The island cinematography was pretty great. Especially in the first few seasons. Plus the incredible MG score (life and death still gets me).

Probably most importantly lost created an enormous community of fans. From twitter to Facebook to lostpedia to podcasts to thousands of viewing parties around the world, lost was what everybody was talking about.

I think this had a lot to do with it. LOST was the first TV show that I experienced such a devoted and enthusiastic interaction among fans as evidenced by the huge ongoing threads on this board during the active series.

From the storylines, to the production quality, to the characters, it was such a well done show. Very few weak links and it would just constantly captivate the audience. It had that element of mystery, drama, and action. It literally had something for everybody and there was a character everyone could relate too. Lost was also one of the first shows that had such an international cast. Plus, it was such a unique concept. The show's use of flashbacks and Easter eggs was kind of groundbreaking at the time. It had its own universe and fans were eager to dig through it. Off the top of my head, there wasn't another show like that before.

One thing I believe is really important to the success of Lost is the writers knew what their timeline was to finish the show, so the flow of the seasons towards the finale was a little smoother than you'd find with other shows that reach that point.

Let me also add that it found it's success around the same time that iTunes & DVR became popular. So people were able to watch episodes over again or in a row. because of that, you could pick up on many more things about the show.

It was all about the characters. I liked how the time was taken to slowly reveal characters to you. I guess that is the definition of character development.

Another character I would include that was an integral part of the story was the island itself. I thought of the island as a character and it was continually revealing a new surprise or mystery.
