I've had to add freon almost twice a year for the last 2 years. It's become a pain in the arse

What are my options?

Obviously I don't know where it's leaking, but what would typically have to be repaired/replaced? And ballpark cost maybe??

Depends if it's in the refrigerant line they could be fixed,if in the evap coil or condenser coil you screwed.

It's about 5 years old

It's a POS goodman unit that I would happily replace if I planned to stay in this house long term

most all of them leak when they get a little age on them and unfortunately, the leaks are damn hard to find...

it is typically cheaper to add freon every year, but twice a year is a really big pain in the arse...

it is hard to say what is likely leaking, but I would say that I have seen the evaporator coil (coil located inside the house)leaking more than anything else...

Do not add any foreign additives too your system, you are just asking for more problems.

Given the age and manufacturer, you probably have an Al-Cu evaporator coil, and it's almost certain it is the leaky part. There's actually a class action suit about it. The labor could run around $500, and the part another $500 or so if you're no longer under warranty. They are using all-aluminum coils now, and the problem should not recur once you get it fixed.

I am going to guess you didn't register it within 60 days of install, otherwise it would have a 10 year warranty. I had a leak in my evaporator coil but it was replaced under warranty.

That's correct

I became aware of this when I changed the gas valve (3 weeks out of warranty) earlier this winter

I had a new Goodman do the same thing. It was leaking from the inside coil. It was hell to find but the repairman told me that they had to replace about half of the inside coils on their installs. So it's not new and there may be some kind of warranty on it if that's the problem.
