How can I pull contacts off a busted phone?

I recently was forced to replace my old HTC Incredible 4g due to a broken screen. The phone itself still powers up, but it's impossible to navigate, for obvious reasons. A week or two after having the new phone, I started to realize that I was missing a number of contacts that were stored in my old phone, but that were never backed up by google/gmail for whatever reason. I tried bringing it to Verizon, but they just shrug and say there's nothing they can do, and the cell phone repair shops want $120 to replace the LCD, which I can't justify. I've scoured the internet trying to find a solution but keep hitting dead ends. Any suggestions? So far I've tried:
- installing the HTC backup software, which I can get to work, but have no clue how to transfer into my new phone.
- using sketchy software like this that won't recognize the phone
- digging around in the phone files itself with it connected to my laptop via usb

It can't find the phone. USB debugging isn't enabled and I have no way of enabling it, that I know of

Oh yeah, forgot about having to switch modes on the phone. I'll keep thinking about it and hopefully someone drops in who has a solution.

Thanks. If I could just get them on my computer where I could actually VIEW the contacts I'd be in good shape. I can get HTC's backup utility to find the phone and run a backup, but I can't find anyway to open it or transfer it to my Galaxy.

I'm thinking about buying a used, unlocked HTC to restore my backup to...

who doesn't sync contacts online these days?

As I said in the OP, a number of my contacts did not sync up with gmail contacts. It seems to be isolated to newer contacts.

Some were, some weren't. I have no clue why some are missing.

because you added them to the phone, and not as a google contact. I had the same thing happen. That's why I started adding everything online.
You can try this, don't know if it'll work:

If you have ever used adb with your phone, adb /sdcard/* will pull everything stored in internal storage from the phone.

You'll need adb setup on your computer, and you'll need to cd your way into the folder with adb.exe. Forgive me for hotlinking, but this will make it easier: Download this file, courtesy of NexusSHacks.com (I believe it is Zedomax around here). I would advise to unzip the contents in this file to your C:\Nexus directory, so that adb.exe is at C:\Nexus\adb.exe.
Now, plug in your phone. Open your start menu and search for "cmd" and open up Command Prompt. This is the basic Windows CLI (Command Line Interface).
First, you'll need to open the directory of the Nexus folder you created earlier. To do this, type in the command prompt:
quote:
cd C:\Nexus
Now, you want to make sure adb sees your phone:
quote:
adb devices
The adb service should start and if it sees your phone it will pop up a serial number. If there is no serial number, you can't use adb while inside android and you'll need to tick the option or find an alternative way. Assuming it finds your device, you are good to go.
In order to copy the /sdcard folder of your Nexus S, you will use the pull command. We will throw all of the files into C:\Nexus\sdcard, for reference. So in the command prompt, type:
quote:
adb pull /sdcard .\sdcard
It looks a little confusing but don't stress. Just make sure you type it in exactly (dot, correct slash, etc). This will take a little while since it might transfer up to ~15GB worth. You'll see a new line with "C:\Nexus>" with a flashing cursor when it is done. Then you can view all the contents of your sdcard at C:\Nexus\sdcard and do with them as you please.
Also note, for this you'll need up to ~15GB of free space on your C:\ partition, make sure you have this before you start. Good luck
ETA: Those are the instructions for doing it for a Nexus but it is basically the same for every phone.

I'm confused, is that to pull everything off an SD card or from internal storage? And what the hell do I do with it once I've transferred it from the phone? I'm assuming it will be all kinds of unrecognizable file formats?

It's confusing because Android started naming both internal and external storage as SD Card, but this is to pull from internal storage. Once you have transferred it you will be looking for contacts.db or contacts.csv. Once you find it you can either transfer it to the new phone or open it on your computer with your adb program to view and copy the numbers you need.
