And I was wondering what the Tech Board would recommend?

I currently have a 32" Samsung C530 that is way too small to put in my living room. My ideal size currently is around 55". I would like a smart TV, but I absolutely do not need 3D. As far as the price goes, I'm not looking to spend more than $1500 or so. I was considering just getting the Samsung H6350 since I've always been a fan of the brand, but the reviews I've seen on it aren't spectacular - most note that the picture quality and sound is mediocre for the price range (although I'll probably get a soundbar soon anyway).

So, what do y'all say?

Definitely Samsung. H7150 55" looks like a fine machine, make sure it's a Samsung, with Smart TV apps, and you won't be disappointed.

They are too cumbersome

Smart TV's just add to the price. If you already have roku or you dont even have netflix, etc then why go smart? Try and look for a nonsmart TV if you dont want the bells and whistles. Just bought a sharp aquas 65" for the playroom non smart tv with a roku stick for 929. LED/120

Also, I have owned all Samsung products and have been pleased with them. If it wasnt for the good deal, I would have stayed Samsung but went with Sharp instead. So far so good

I would stay away from smart tvs. I have a 2010 model Samsung 55" that I bought in early 2011. They don't update with new apps. I want the Amazon app so I can watch prime movies on it, but it isn't available. I would get a non smart tv and get roku, chromecast etal

I'm in the market for a new TV as well. Don't want to start a new thread so I'll post here, what are the top brands? Sony and Samsung? I'm looking for a 40" or 42" non-smart TV but I have no idea what to look for as far as the specs go. What is my best option?

Find a non smart in that range is tough because thats what they are making most TVs now which "bloats" them. Plus smart tvs use their own platforms and some are very slow and dont work well.

Ive been a samsung guy and have been pleased. Sony is good. I have stayed away from Vizio but thats me personal preference. I have heard both horror stories as well as good things so its all on you to do research on what you really want.

You might want to look into a plasma if you want something good in that price range.

I just picked up the Vizio E600i-B3 for $625.

It is a 60" LED and the picture is really incredible for the price.

I am in the market too, my 3 year old 40" Sharp just went down (power board) and repair is $300.

It is a LC-40LE835U and the picture is fantastic. At that point in time, I thought it was the best picture out there.

I have bought 5 Samsongs in the past 5 years, 3 are toast, 1 is kicking, and 1 has a black stripe down the screen (ex has it so that is her problem). And now the Sharp goes out after 3.

I am not too happy. The pundits say the screens should last for 60,000 hours, which is ~7 years if you run it 24/7.

I cannot go over 40" due to the cabinet width. Checking out the pictures at Best Buy, Sony looked to me to have the best picture at $480, it is 60Hz but claims to have technology which makes the picture as good as 240. It is a smart TV which I could care less about as my DVD player is smart.

So, repair or buy? What is your experience with life expectancy with the HD TVs (obviously mine is poor), particularly Sharp and Sony (not going back to Samsung, that ship has sailed)?

I did look at a Samsung 4K set running a 4K feed and couldn't look away. It was incredible.

Any comments would be appreciated. Strongly leaning buy.

I went with the 55" H6350 after all. In hindsight, I probably could have Internet shopped for a non-smart version and gotten the Netflix hookup elsewhere, but I've already bought this one so I'll roll with it.

The H7150 looked really nice, but the 3D would be absolutely wasted on me. I can't wait until this fad dies out.

Samsung makes a very nice tv. However, for the money, I think Vizio is your best best. You could go with a $1200 Samsung or spend $800-900 with Vizio and likely not be able to tell a difference.

Yeah I'd say that unless you're looking for a truly top-notch, high-end television, Vizio won't disappoint.

Make sure it's 1080dpi at 120Hz, LCD or LED doesn't matter too too much if you want a smaller TV. LCD would skim some of the cost off.

You can even skim more cost off if you get a refurbished TV from the manufacturer. They work like new.
