Probably resonates more with the older folks on here.I remember watching him in '78 when he was 21 just 5 yrs older than I was thinking this guy has it all. Now he's died, just five yrs older than I am. Circle of life can be chilling at times. Here's the clip from the game ending at bat. Epic season. This was the one when the Yankees came back from 14 games to force a one game playoff with Boston. 1978 World Series Game 2 Welch strikes out Reggie to end the game

He was good. I read he was the last guy to win 25 in a year.

He was the ace stud on those late 80's A's teams that won 3 straight AL pennants 88-90.
Welch and Dave Stewart were an awesome 1-2 (both came from the Dodgers), and Eckerseley coming out of the pen.
Hard to believe they only won 1 World Series with that lineup.
RIP, Bob!

Reds fricked them up in 1990.

Too young. I don't remember seeing him pitch, but grew familiar with him through the backs of baseball cards.

Nevermind
I see it was a heart attack
Too damn young

I was a huge Reggie fan as a kid. That K by Welch was stunning and at the time made Welch a household name, every kid in America knew who he was.
He was a uber-competitor on the field. Tough to hear, all our days are coming at some point

I saw his debut on TV a long time ago. Can't remember the opponent. He was just called up and the TV camera showed him warming up in the bull pen. He was lobbing balls about 30 mph.
I told my brother "This new guy throws really hard."
Bro: "How do you know?"
Me: "In all the years I played the softer pitchers warm up hard. But the faster pitchers warm up soft."
Welch came in and threw some blazing fastballs to retire the side.
He later became a terrific starter. Had some drinking problems.

Saw that game the other day on the MLB network, that was the last World Series game to be played at Riverfront. Welch left the game with the lead, would have been his 29th win of the season had they held the lead. They had to issue an APB for Tom Browning when the game went into extra innings.

He didn't throw that hard

Bob Welch, rhp. Terrific curve, 87-88 mph fastball that appears faster because it's high and seems to jump. Forkball complements heat.

Let the old-timer weigh in. Welch had one of the best fastballs in baseball when he first broke in to the major leagues back in the late 70's. 94-95 was NOT the norm. The scouting report you reference is from 1988 after some elbow and shoulder issues.

I was watching that WS game. Reggie took him deep a couple of games later. Again, just five years older than I am. So long, Bob

That was epic, but... This is Reggie vs Bob in Game 6

And that scouting report references that Welch's fastball looked faster than it really was. So unless an old-timer on here clocked him with a radio gun, I'll go with a published scouting report
And I didn't even address the fact that Welch made his debut during an early season game on a Tuesday. Not sure where this would have been broadcasted in order to be able to watch it on tv in 1978. That season, ABC televised games on Monday and Thursday nights and NBC televised games on Saturdays.
