Vogts: I will certainly not cheer when the US score a goal against us (Germany)

LINK (German article)
I find this a little bit different than JK tempering expectations. This is a guy, employed by the US, basically saying he will be actively rooting against us for one match.
I get that he is German & once coached the team, but still something about this doesn't sit well with me considering that he is making up the scouting reports for the group opponents.

I don't know the English translation, but from the tweet it doesn't sound like he is actively rooting against the US. It just sounds like if the US beats Germany then he wants to cover his arse.

meh,
In the club level, It is not uncommon for a player, say traded from a team he has no hard feelings for to score against his old team and simply not celebrate the goal out of respect (ie. like Tim Howard's goal reaction tough different circumstances being fellow goalkeepers).
In contrast, when a player is on bad terms with his old club, he'll score a goal and then celebrate by kissing his new clubs' crest.

i mean, countless players don't cheer when they play their old sides. not to mention he's saying "when the US score", not "if". that's pretty damn positive. i don't think anything he said conflicts with the job he's being paid to do.

This was the best part. We're scoring against The Mannschaft baby.

I've never been more tempted to make jokes whenever someone says their german name.... it's difficult to hold it in, it's so hard to.... dammit.

What do people expect him to say?

“Of course, Germany, Ghana and Portugal are superior to Americans in footballing terms,” said Vogts. “That is why the U.S. team must (have) top-driven (work rates). Their advantage is that Americans know the heat. That’s why I advised Jurgen in preparation for a high-running intensity in training. You need to play to this advantage.”
This quote stood out to me more. I agree with Portugal and Germany but I think saying Ghana is superior might be pushing it. Hard to tell in what sense he means though, since "footballing terms" is a little vague.

I say it German as frick. It just rolls off the tongue. And I giggle every time.

Let's just be honest, he'll always be "that count from Togo" to Arsenal fans.

That's the first thing that came to my mind also.

Good for Berti. Good to know some people still have a sense of national pride.

I know man, he would never cheer for a team that relies on dual nationals and players not born in his country or those who aren't 100% pure German.
Oh wait.

It won't be that hard to score on Germany. It will be outscoring them that is going to tough.
