88% say Social Security has been good for the country.
87% say Medicare has been good for the country.
77% say Medicaid has been good for the country.
These are all socialist programs.
This poll proves that when push comes to shove, the USA is a liberal socialist country.
It may be popular to declare oneself a "conservative," but when socialist programs are on the line, few people want to do away with them.

i'd imagine about 10 years ago, similar rates of people opposed gay marriage. #wrongsideofhistory

This poll proves that people who have paid in to a retirement and medical program for all their adult lives (disclaimer: author is expecting to cash in at some point) expect at some point to use those services.

Social Security or Medicare/Medicaid isn't "Socialism".
Socialism is
quote:
communal ownership: a political theory or system in which the means of production and distribution are controlled by the people and operated according to equity and fairness rather than market principles
A word for things like Social Security, Medicare, Infrastructure, law enforcement, national defense is "civilization". People like that. Unfortunately we've become a little too "civilized" in that we're spending money we don't have on things we don't need.

88% say Social Security has been good for the country
More might say a national defense has been good for the country.
Did you have a point?

On one hand I'm against social security on principle. On the other hand, my grandma on my mom's side is incredibly irresponsible. When my mom was growing up, her parents used to spend their entire paychecks. They smoked and drank and spent a lot of their money on those things.
Now that she's old and retired, she doesn't have hardly any money.
You can say she should have saved and should have been more responsible and yadda yadda. I know. But there is no time machine so it's reality.
A lot of people do not save anything. Why? I have no idea why people are so irresponsible. But they are. It's just how it is.
Which is why the government essentially saving for them might not be such a bad idea. On principe I disagree with it. But on practicality, we may be better off as a country from it.

You don't fix the problem by continuing to subsidize irresponsibility and stealing from the future.

I have no problem with concept if social security but it isn't sustainable in it's current form. It should be practical...move the retirement age to keep up with average lifespans and only pay a person what they put in

What about the interest earned on your contribution to SS over your working life span? If the government is going to forcefully take my money to run their business shouldn't we get some kind of reward for the "loan" to the government for all those years. If you say "well you are getting interest paid on your contribution but that should be all" then I say let me keep my own money and invest it the way I see fit.

This poll proves that Ben Franklin was right. As usual.

that will herald the end of the republic.”

The OP is a sad troll.
Are we taking his ridiculous premise prima facie?

I would prefer to have all the money the government takes out of my check, but since they do yes, I think it would be good to get it back at some point.
I am sure I never will.
