My wife has been to Colorado a few times and and always hints that she would love to take me( I have not been to Colorado, only driven through.) I was thinking of surprising her with a trip there for Christmas. Breckenridge would be the ideal destination because family lives close by. Can the OT give me any advice on the effects of winter weather traveling to Colorado in December by flight and also reviews of the Breckenridge area?

I don't mean to sound like a dick but why don't you ask the family that lives there?

Its her aunt that lives there and being that its a surprise I don't know if I can trust her to keep her trap shut.

They are well prepared for winter so you shouldn't have an issue. Breck is beautiful around Christmas time.

Depending on the weather, the highway to Breck from Denver airport can sometimes close because of the wind/snow.

Breck as a town is really cool but it's pretty crowded if you're looking to ski. There are better resorts that you can go to that won't be as crowded if you're not dead set on Breck.

Any reason other than family that you chose Breck?

Breck during Christmas time is the worst place to be in Colorado. It will be overcrowded and the prices will be heavily inflated. It's the nicest resort nearest to Denver so that means it is the place most people flock to during the holidays.

I-70 during that time of year can completely shut down if a storm rolls through.

It's normally about a 1 1/2 hour drive but during Christmas last year people spent up to 8 hours trying to get back into Denver.

This is where you should go. Steamboat, Telluride or Crested Butte are all much better options.

Especially if you are bringing family, check out Keystone too.

Your experience will be better in every way if you go even one week before or after Christmas week.

Unless some crazy winter storm comes through, travel is no issue at all. These resorts don't make money when the roads to get to them are closed.

We're going for Thanksgiving. You'll have a great time.

I love Breck, but the crowds drove me to Keystone quite a bit when I lived in Colorado. Skiing the backside of Keystone is a blast.

December there is not bad at all actually. Where it picks up the pace is after the New Year.

travel will not be a problem, as cold weather tourism is what makes the whole place tick...worst case is, you land at the airport and have to frick around Denver for a day or so until the roads clear...

fwiw, my favorite town in all of colorado is steamboat springs...it is a true western ranch town with a nice ski hill to pull in some tourist dollars...if you are into red carpet and movie star-type vacations, it is probably what you are looking for, but that is where I would go...

Just spent this past Christmas in Breckenridge. Had a blast. No real weather issues, and very cold there with a lot of snow during our stay.

ez flight--fly directly to Vail-Eagle if you can. Then basically no drive at all. Breck is fun. Plenty to do and fairly laid back. Real town instead of fake resort town (although it has its share of fake).

Breckinridge is stunning and an awesome Christmas destination. Not cheap and you will want to rent a 4 wheel drive. The driving can get dicey, especially at night. You can hire a van to drive you you to and from airport but pricey.

Might also want to consider flying into Beaver Creek but more expensive and still probably 30 minute drive to Breckinridge .
