Interesting article. The Magic were almost called the Orlando Juice. They also considered the Orlando Heat but figured it gave a negative impression of the city. I don't know why they didn't just go by the Orlando Magicians since at the time they were the only team without an s at the end. I am still partial to the New Orleans Rougarou.

A group of San Antonio investors purchased the Dallas Chaparrals from the American Basketball Association in 1973 and promptly changed the team name to the San Antonio Gunslingers. Before the Gunslingers played their first game in their new home, the ownership group renamed the team the Spurs. Some accounts indicate that the name was voted upon in a name-the-team contest. It may have just been a coincidence that one of the team's main investors, Red McCombs, was born in Spur, Texas.
I have no doubt that McCombs was behind the change to "Spurs." He's arrogant enough to demand such.
Wasn't there a USFL team called the San Antonio Gunslingers, though? Love the name, even though it's a mouthful and the alliteration and brevity of "Spurs" is still more appealing.

When Vancouver was awarded an expansion franchise in 1994 to begin play the following season, the team's owners had tentative plans to name the team the Mounties. The Royal Mounted Canadian Police and fans alike objected, so team officials resumed their search for a name. The local newspaper sponsored a name-the-team contest, which club officials monitored before choosing Grizzlies, an indigenous species to the area, over Ravens. When the team relocated to Memphis before the 2002-03 season, FedEx was prepared to offer the Grizzlies $120 million to rename the team the Express, but the NBA rejected the proposal
So we dodged two awful choices

The Express playing in the FedEx Forum would have been just a little TOO literal

Detroit Pistons The Pistons trace their roots to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where they were known as the Zollner Pistons. What's a Zollner Piston? A piston manufactured by then-team owner Fred Zollner, who named the club after his personal business. When the team moved to Detroit in 1957, Zollner dropped his name from the nickname but retained Pistons. The name was fitting for the Motor City.
Aware of the Ft. Wayne history, but not of the nickname. At least made sense when the relocated to the motor city

I specifically remember those ideas bring floated. Rumors were that FedEx wanted to get the color scheme to be orange and purple too.

Well that's bullshite.
Besides costing the owner $120 million, Express is a better name than the Grizzles

Unfortunately the article is too dated. The Hornets are now the Pelicans and the Bobcats are now (somewhat again) the Hornets.

The Phoenix White Wing Doves would have been really strange. Especially since it would be another 13 years before Phoenix-native Stevie Nicks would release "Edge of Seventeen" (commonly known as "Just Like the White Winged Dove").

Odd, since Vancouver has had minor league baseball teams named Mounties.

The Bucks were almost the Skunks too.

Interesting that the Pistons and the Rockets were named such before they moved to Detroit and Houston. They really fit well.

Thunder sounds like a WNBA name.
