If you've got the opportunity watch or DVR it. Episode one is playing right now. IMO, the greatest miniseries ever made.

I had it on DVD, but gave it away when I got the Blu-Ray set.

I've watched the first 3 or 4 episodes at least 5 times - and the back half of the series 3 times.

I'll say that ABC, PBS and HBO dominate this category.

Obviously Roots(ABC) deserves a lot of credit for showing what could be done with the format. They tend to be either documentary or historical, but a great fictional example is The Stand (ABC).

But, Ken Burns' stuff on PBS (The Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, particularly) and the 3 great HBO series (From the Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers and The Pacific) - all really stand out.

I'm still partial to From the Earth to the Moon, but Band of Brothers is way up there as well.

I have it at #2 behind Planet Earth, but it really is incredible. Best generation by far. :saluteemoticonthaticantrememberthecodefor:

Band of Brothers is on HBOGo all the time, I watched episodes 1-4 and 9-10 on Memorial day weekend. I don't watch the Ardennes episodes that often.

The National Parks one is probably my favorite miniseries. Earth to the Moon is tied.

Until they got home and created the Boomers. They started out great and then went downhill with quickness.

Great series. I've been watching my DVDs since memorial day working my way through the series again for probably like the 10th time. I'm up to The Last Patrol.

Only series that gives it a run for its money in greatest miniseries ever in my opinion is Lonesome Dove.

Those are tough to get through. (not in a bad way)

The assault on Foy is so awesome though.

I don't see how anyone could actually skip episodes when watching BoB.

Same here. I actually find the later episodes where people are still getting killed as the war is winding down to be more gut wrenching. In the D-day, Market Garden and Bulge episodes I think they were not thinking so much about making it out. But to get killed late in the game, even when they were pretty much an occupation force seems more tragic to me.

Just finished the whole series last night.

When the old guy is talking at the end and telling the story about his grandson asking if he was a hero in the war... Onions, man.

Lonesome dove is one I thought people might say, but I didn't expect so much love for From the Earth to the Moon. Great miniseries, but I liked Moonshot better than that one.

The Pacific was good, but nowhere near BoB. Episode 2 just ended, and the adventure has just begun. There about to start taking cities, getting caught behind enemy lines and running full speed into heavily lopsided engagements.

I think BoB is the greatest mini series when dealing with a story about a particular unit of soldiers that needed to be told because of what they did. The Pacific was incredible for it's exploration into a much darker side of WW2, what it did to the mind of the soldier before, during and after The War. Both are absolutely amazing and I've watched both more times than I can remember but I always find something new to take away from each viewing

I think once you have seen the training episode with Ross from Friends being a dick a few times you can skip to "Day of Days" to start from then on

Are they still planning to make the mini series about the bombers?

I hadn't heard of that, I'm sure I'd watch it but I don't see how it can be as good as infantry stories simply because of their "accommodations"

Like if Biff Tannen was a badass paratrooper.

(Sorry - what I always thought.)
