Deer flys... What do they hate?

Last trip out, evidently the deer flies had eaten all the g-nats.
ANd the g-nats must've been full of protein and magic dust, cause the flies could fly faster than the boat and eat my legs while in flight.
What repels the bastards?

Last time was 3 weeks ago, had my north La yankee buddy with me, and his son.
We did okay on Sat, very slow on Sunday.
His 17 yo son had a blast... so I guess that's a win, huh?

I don't recall the name of the stuff but 98% of the active ingredient was Deet. It worked keeping horse flys off. Not sure if it's the same fly but big biteing MFers that leave a mosquito like bite behind. They would land on you then take off with out biting.

In my battles with deer flies mosquito repellent helps but does not keep them away. They seem to bite less when I wear the repellant but still land on me and still bite some.
I hate those things. If one finds you he will stay with you until he has eaten or you kill it. Fly swatter works well.

And they will latch themselves on when you get under way and ride to your next spot you stop to fish. They were clinging to the fenders of my four wheeler once. I hate em. Just let them land and kill em. Only solution
