I'm trying to ease him into a touchscreen phone and don't need to get him a beast. Thinking of something around $200.

We're with TMob and he just got his first tablet and I want to hook him up with hotspot, so that's why the need for a new phone. He sits in a truck/van for hours on end as he's working on all the films coming to town (Jurassic Park currently).

Girl at TMob said to look at the Samsung Galaxy Light or the LG Optimus F3. Anyone have any experience? They both have LTE and hotspot. The Light is faster and has 4.2.2 vs 4.1.2 for the F3.

Any other recommendations? TIA

What about a Widows phone? They are easy to use and people like them a lot

No personal experience, but I've heard this, too. It would probably be a lot more familiar to him than Android.

They have the Nokia Lumia 521 for $120 on the TMob website. 1 Ghz vs 1.4 for the Light. Doesn't seem to be LTE either.

My dad has never even logged onto a computer before , so he doesn't know Windows from Android.

I'll keep looking into Windows phones though, didn't really think of that

Good luck.

I wish I were joking, but my mother doesn't know how to email, and she still uses the first Nokia cell phone. I know it's almost impossible to get them to embrace the future.

My dad sent out his first email a couple weeks ago

But I'm stoked he's ready to try.

My parents still have flip phones that are about 10 years old, but they fart around on their laptop a little. Good for your old man.

iPhone really is the best for this. Got my dad one a couple years ago and he picked it up quick. This was a man who didn't even know what Google was before he got the phone.

I know. Price is too much though. Even the 5c is $550. I don't feel like going through the eBay/Craigslist thing as I'm in Hawaii and he's in NOLA and if he got a fake or whatever, that would suck.

Eta: Looked on eBay, good sellers with iPhone 5C is $375 range. Trying to stay under $200.

Any thought to just getting him a hotspot device? Ease him into it with the tablet. I'd recommend similar operating system to the tablet.

Reason why, in case he needs to use the phone for something important and is still not good with it yet.

Wife and I got my parents an iPad and its been quite the adventure. Still not on to smart phones yet. It's been a year

Eta, about 6 months ago Verizon had flip phone smart phones. Not sure about tmobile

I used the Nokia 521 and it would be a great first smartphone. Windows phone is very easy to learn.

I concur with all of the Windows Phone suggestions. It's simple to learn, efficient, incredible battery life. You can probably find something better than the Nokia 521 if you look a little

Actually yes, I did think about that. I just figured he wouldn't want to carry around another device. But he'll probably have a steep learning curve too

TMob by chance? Wondering if it's hotspot capable. Shows it's 4g, not seeing LTE. I've never used a Windows phone or even played with one yet, easier to learn than Andriod?

That's actually quite awesome, good for you and him. I do sort of think Windows phone might be a good start. The tiles can sized if he has any issues seeing the screen.

I would also say to get him the biggest screen he would be comfortable with, especially if he has any issues with his eyesight.

iPhone or Windows phone. My parents both got Androids as their first, and they only use 4 functions: Internet, Phone, Messenger, Radio If you're only going to be using your phone for mostly critical functions, might as well make the interface fast and simple.

*Not a dig against Android. I like all three
