"There are a significant number of transfers in the pipeline at various stages and I think you're going to be seeing substantial progress this year," the senior administration official said, amid a furor over the release of five Taliban prisoners for a captured US soldier in Afghanistan.

What I love is they see the backlash...and then say they're making progress on freeing more terrorists.

it's deranged.

So what legalities could come up with this situation? I read that O went against protocol in releasing the 5. That there hadn't been a meeting on them in 5yrs with the House of Reps and that the intelligence groups weren't consulted like they usually are and they had been able to prevent the releases previously....

So if he goes and transfers/trades/releases more, are there any true ramifications

Graham was saying he would be put up for impeachment if he pulled it again, but on what basis?

Part of the "we were doing this all along" strategy.

I think its what he wants. He's so bad now that he needs something to get his F'up supporters out to defend him, and an Impeachment couldbring them out...riots and shite..

He went against a law that he had already determined was unconstitutional and unenforceable. Since it appears that signing statements carry the weight of law, he was probably perfectly within the law by not recognizing it.

It likely would require a judicial challenge by Congress to force him to enforce it.

Without a challenge, I don't see how. And if he just plain releases them without getting a pack of gum in return, he is well within his powers to do so.

I don't see the "high crimes" Obama would be guilty of for any impeachment hearing, and while rhetoric from the right is building, I don't see anyone brave (or stupid) enough to actually do it.

I was listening to a guy on the Wallstreet Journal radio program today and he said there are no laws being broken. He said that the only pushback would be political but not legal since the president as commander and chief can make decisions on his own in these circumstances?

Obama simply doesn't give a frick anymore. It's like he is in meltdown mode over possibly losing the Senate so he is just going to do what he wants till someone stops him

Have we, and by "we" I mean the government, ever had a long term plan for the residents of Gitmo? Keep them there until they die? Transfer them to a federal pen stateside? I don't necessarily agree with releasing them, but what are our plans with them long term?

The President can make deals and release enemies of the State? Obama flexing at will.

Well, we need to start releasing them. We can't keep GITMO open forever.

I oppose the release of individuals of the five's caliber, but we need to start shutting it down and getting out of the ME.

Bush released 500+. Obama should follow his lead. Go through the appropriate protocols and get it done.

Well, that would be nationally and internationally politically retarded.
