Thoughts on alternative offshore chum/baits

I've been considering using some alternative sources for chum and/or bait for rig fish for an upcoming offshore trip.
Two things have come to mind and I was wondering what the OB thought:
1. Threadfin shad - I can cast net all the shad I want pretty much and I was considering freezing large quantities to cut up for chum offshore or using whole ones as bait
2. Scrap venison - whenever I process my deer there is always some scrap meat left over. Too tough/sinewy to really do anything with so I end up just throwing it in a bag to freeze. I probably have 2 gallon bags of it accumulated.
Do you think offshore fish would eat either or both of the above?

Wonder if the commercial crawfish bait would work? Seems like it would get some stink in the water and not make a mess in the boat.

Threadfin shad
This may work for chum if they fall apart easy, not sure of how much oil they'll put off in comparison to the menhaden we normally use. Menhaden oil is like crack to lemonfish.

I think offshore fish would eat both of those...the venison might pull up some sharks or something like that, though...

Menhaden oil is like crack to all fish, salt or fresh

I wouldn't use venison due to sharks. Crawfish bait would work if you ground it up and added menhaden oil. For a while I used pasta/rice/pogey oil/gulp chum/by catch mixture.

I hse the remains of boiled crawfish. Put it in a large bucket and get some boots. Stomp it into small pieces and bam.

Outstanding chum and bait if they are about 4" to 8". If you have a meat grinder, pass them thru that one time and put that in a cut off milk jug, add a little water and freeze. Buy a couple landry bags or crawfish sacks, drop block in and hang over the side. Easy chum.
I wouldn't use meat. That might bring in the sharks.

I have put almost everything immaginable in a chum churn at some point. Yes the scrap veneson will work to some degree as will leftovers, boiled rice with fish oil added and just about anything else ranging from mac and cheese to shrimp hulls and cornbread. Once you get some chummed in you can feed them almost anything. Real FISH does work best however getting things to come in.
