What is slenderman(sp)?

I was listening to the radio and apparently the two girls that attempted to stab their friend to death were inspired by this website. I have never heard of it and am totally unfamiliar with what it is. The radio host said it has something to so with a belief in demonic possession. are any of you familiar with it?

Slender man is a tall scary guy that Something Awful forums created by editing pictures with a creepy tall guy in them. It's spawned stories and games about him.
