What happened to fireflys?

I caught one last night in my yard and it made me realize that I hadn't seen one in years. When I was a kid we'd catch seemingly dozens every night. Are there less now than there used to be? or just my perception?...

True that, I have not seen them in over ten years, every summer they were out in full force. Maybe just kids don't stay out playing when its dark also.

The stuff they spray for mosquitos kills a lot of bugs. Catalpa worms/butterflies have become scarce in neighborhoods too...

I think they may have been a casualty of the mosquito abatement program. I still see them in rural areas which don't seem to spray.

They phased out the old school lightning bugs. The new LED bugs are slowly taking their place. You will see more in the future.

I've not noticed them missing. I still see them all over the place during the summer.

I think you answered your own question but seriously.. I've wondered the same thing over the years..

Same thing that happened to the waves in Gulf Shores.

also been a lack of gnats
I remember being a kid playing sports and those things were ruthless.

they went out of production. nowadays you just see the older ones flying around, usually carrying illegal cargo. they're a favorite for scavengers.

Yeah, I was thinking they were scarce too. Then we went camping a few weeks ago. I was planning to hike into the woods at dark to see the fireflys, but once it got dark we could watch them in the trees right above our campsite. Kids loved it.
