Astros take JD Davis Cal State - Fullerton (CA) 3B

6'3" 220lbs DOB: 04/27/93

2011 fifth-round pick of the Rays out of Elk Grove (Calif.) HS, Davis turned down pro ball to attend Cal State Fullerton. Three years later, he's one of the better two-way talents in the Draft. Davis likely will get drafted as a first baseman, because his right-handed power is hard to ignore. He finished second in the Cape Cod League home run derby last summer, and he went deep six times in 123 at-bats with wood on the Cape (including the all-star game and playoffs). He controls the strike zone well and could hit for a solid average to go with his pop, with almost all of his value as a position player coming from his bat. Davis has power in his arm, too. As a reliever, he has worked at 92-94 mph with his fastball and 82-84 mph with his slider, and saw time this spring as Fullerton's closer.

all I could find. Sorry Ryno. This guy sucks too.

quote:

A 2011 fifth-round pick by Tampa Bay, Davis chose instead to enroll at Cal State Fullerton.

As a freshman, Davis saw time both on the mound and at designated hitter.

On the mound, Davis had a 3.52 ERA with three walks and nine strikeouts in 23 innings.

Offensively, Davis put up a team-best four homeruns and had twenty RBI.

Davis saw his numbers jump dramatically in his sophomore season, as he batted .318 with 11 doubles. He hit four homeruns and had 50 RBI.

Most of his starts (52) came as the designated hitter, but once again Davis saw time on the mound compiling a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings. He made 16 appearances, three of which were starts.

During his sophomore summer, Davis played in the Cape Cod League for the Chatham Anglers. He was named to the 2013 Cape Cod All-League Team, after putting up a .309 batting average with six homeruns and 29 RBI.

Davis time on the mound was limited, as he only managed five appearances all in relief. He had a 0.00 ERA in four and 2/3 innings while recording two saves.

So far this season, Davis is batting .325 with three homers and nine RBI through ten games. He has struck out eleven times, but the junior has also walked eight times resulting in a .440 on-base percentage while primarily playing first base.

Although early in the year, Davis has only made one appearance on the mound. He recorded a win in an inning of relief, where he only faced two batters.

In the series against Oregon, Davis went 4-10 with four RBI.

In the win on Friday, Davis’ highlight came in the top of the sixth inning, after a double by Matt Chapman put runners on second and third with two outs. Davis stayed back and laced a breaking ball to right, picking up two RBI.

His other key moment came on Sunday when he hit a go-ahead solo homer in the top of the seventh inning. He then gave the Titans a cushion with a sac-fly in the ninth.

Davis is regarded as a good hitter with above average power. He profiles best at first base, although he has a fastball that has reached 94 mph.

In a time where right-handed power in the MLB seems to be fading, Cal State Fullerton has two potential top 50 draft eligible prospects on their roster.

I like the Mengden pick watched him up close against LSU last year. He is a bulldog and a great competitor. Funky delivery

He struggled this year but he's competitive as shite and works hard. He's also from Houston. Too bad we aren't still in the NL as he has some serious pop

quote:

After a summer where Nix and his power arm were in top form, the big high school right-hander looked like a sure-fire top 100 type talent heading into the spring. A rough season has put a down arrow next to his name, but he still has the raw tools many scouts like to see. The UCLA commit can light up the radar gun, touching as high as 96 mph, but the rest of his pitching game remains a work in progress. He shows some feel for a changeup, though he doesn't need it all that much. His breaking ball is inconsistent and tends to be slurvy. Big and physical, there is projection to all of his stuff, with the chance of him having three Major League-average or better pitches when all is said and done. It may take him a while to get there and it might be a team that had a decision-maker who saw him over the summer that selects him in the earlier rounds of the Draft.

Baseball America had Jacob Nix going 104th overall. The Astros just got him at 153. High upside HS arm. Love the pick

Might be hard to sign Nix. Admittingly, I know absolutely nothing about him. But if he is a high ceiling high school arm that already throws mid 90s and just needs to work on a second & third pitch, he might choose college to develop those to see if he can make more money in the draft in a few years.

Again, I have no idea. Just seems like a 5th round pick with that much upside would go to college.

Sounds like Nix will be a tough pull. Love the upside if they can pony up the $$.
