I will get a very nice commission check next Friday. I am looking to replace my colt sporter AR 15 that I sold during the last craze (got close to 2g) . Thinking about another 556 AR platform or a Springfield SOCOM 16 308.

I want to stay under a grand or close to that amount. I want to keep it in the 16" barrel range. I'm leaning towards the AR platform that way I can change calibers if I want. Unless I get compelling arguments on the 308 SOCOM 16.

I have wanted a 204 ruger and I know that Wilson Combat makes complete uppers in 204 . I know that isn't in the budget I have for this purchase but I can easily afford to add that if I decide later.

So what AR would y'all get for around a grand. Colt, Sig, etc.

I'm not opposed to an AK and in fact I plan to get one in the future. What brand should I look for on the AK?

if you do not have a 204... get it NOW! I dont have one in an AR platform but u do have the savage predator master 204 and all i can say is AWESOME! I have 2 safes full of guns and this one is the most fun! I sighted it in at 100 yds, moved back between 250-300 yards and shot a 3 shot group that didnt look like the bullet dropped any! So so fun!! Pull it out if i see a crow a couple hundred yds in the field and snipe that ho before it knows im there!

I spent a year behind an M14 in Iraq. I love the power and accuracy of a Springfield. When I get past my AR build a Socom 16 will be my next purchase.

Firstly, thank you for your service.

Secondly, the SOCOM 16 is such a bad mother. 16 inches of 308 fury. Seems like a great woods gun, being compact and all. I can't really envision anything it can't kill in the woods around here.

it is a badass
it is compact
it will kill just about anything

however, it is also heavy as shite and will cost well over the OP's budget

I love my S&W M&P-15. I have the Magpul edition, although I think the only Magpul part left on it is the stock and my MBUS when I actually use it.

I got mine for $900 all said and done brand new around 3 years ago. It was a tax-free weekend, and S&W had a $100 rebate going at the time.

Is that a good price for the package? Also, what's the difference in a M4 and an AR15?

Black Rain

If you're willing to spend a little more I recommend them.

Haven't read the whole thread but I love Black Rain's BRO-PG5 model.

That's a good deal on an M400. My cousin has one set up very well and I reviewed it on my YouTube channel. Check it out.

Sig M400 Review

If I remember he paid around 1300-1400 locally so that there is a solid deal.

308 SOCOM 16.

If you want the shorter barreled M1A do not get the SOCOM. The fore end is very heavy with the already heavier (thicker) barrel. The brake is ridiculous as well. The rifle will be front heavy.

If a 16" M1A is what you want get the Scout model, its lighter and less cumbersome to carry. Scope mounting options on M1A's get expensive, and you need expensive to maintain zero.

Honestly, If you are going to have a 308 battle rifle an 18" barrel is the way to go as 7.62x51 was designed with an 18-20" barrel in mind. Better ballistics and no velocity loss.

IMHO, every man should have an M1A. Great rile with great sights.

If you want a truly nice AR, build one. Start off with quality upper and lower receivers, VLTOR, Mega, etc. Get a nice trigger. Good BCG and barrel. You could build a rifle with top notch components for a steal now.

The sig is nice, but you are paying to much for what you are getting.

You can start off with this billet Royal arms lower for 140 from AIM.

Get this upper from Ranier for 170:

Here is a qualit ranier arms barrel for 250ish:

BCM BCGS are going for about 160ish or you go rock one of these:

COST:
Royal arms lower 140
VLTOR Upper 170
Rainer Barrel 250
BCM BCG 160
Gesselle Trigger 200
Misc Handguard 250

At 1150ish, will need a few more less expesnive parts and you are GTG for under 1400.

If you want to stay close to 1k, delete the trigger and upgrade later.

You forgot iron sights, muzzle device, gas block and tube, buffer tube, buffer spring, stock, lower parts kit, and at least one magazine. However you listed some pretty nice parts which also drove the cost up so you could definitely do a more "economy". Build for the close to the price you listed. I am a fan of building but it's not for everyone.

As for the M1... I absolutely love mine. It is my go-to for hunting larger animals. I use the AR's for predators. Mine is an M1a Scout I put in the sage EBR chassis. The others were right, this is neither a cheap nor light setup, but I love it. Sorry for the shitty picture.

If you want something for hunting look at an AR in .300 blackout. If you plan to do more target shooting or predator/varmint hunting, stick with the 5.56. Like you said, you can always change calibers or build another upper later on.
