How can I get detailed information on what my gf's grandfather did in WW2?

He was a retired Seargent Major in the US Army 2nd BN 44th ARTY and is interred wth honors at Ft Sill within 50 yards of Quannah Parker aka Last Chief of The Comanches. Idk what he did to earn that spot but I've been beyond intrigued since I first found out more about him. Thanks in advance!

I would try contacting the VA. And also look for any reunion groups. Not too many of those guys left, but there might still be a web presence.

It's unfortunate, I certainly understand and respect that the didn't want to talk much about his experiences over there while he was alive but it leaves a bit of a chasm as to what made him the man, for better or worse, that he was

Be advised that there was a fire in the seventies that destroyed a lot of records.

The title of this made me think he was a Nazi or something.

You laugh, but there was a story in the Washington Post recently about a local woman who did some digging and found out that her father was a camp commander of one of the Nazi concentration camps. Apparently her pregnant mom had managed to flee the Red Army and resettle in the US with a cover story. Remarried and went on with her life with nobody the wiser.

Not to rain on the parade but the position you describe of his burial at Ft. Sill (where my Grampy did his prep for the Great War) is not necessarily indicative (by itself) of high holy honors. The US Military at our National Cemeteries in burying folks (other than at Arlington, e.g.) is fairly democratic in their practices of locating officers NCOs and enlisted folks all with varied or no specific individual honors all together. There's a special USS Arizona and a Challenger Memorial at the Punchbowl* for example but generally they make folks all equal in location in death.

These post always remind me I'm thankful my grandfather who is 92 is still alive and pretty sharp for the most part. He is coming to visit in two weeks and we always go to the Legion or VFW and he tells stories of his WW2 experiences.
Also last time I took him to the WW2 museum in New Orleans and they are building a replica PT Higgins Boat (think thats it) from old parts of old ones and while going through they tour they actually had a picture of his boat and him and the crew. It took him a while but he remembered all but one guy in the picture. People on the tour started asking him questions, he was in heaven. Haha
It's pretty awesome some of his stories, and something he didn't really talk about when I was growing up.
Good luck in your search.

What's up, man
I have a lot of experience in this area. Contact your local congressional member. They will do the grunt work for you. But be aware, the documents might have been destroyed in the archives fire years ago.
good luck.
