This striking iOS 8 concept highlights how outdated iOS really is

Why can't Apple do this? Although this looks great, there is zero percent chance they will implement such a design change. I for one am bored of the static grid of icons that just stare at you, when they can easily show some useful information instead of forcing you to go in and out of apps. The live tiles from Windows Phone and the Widgets from Android are features really worth copying.

Nah, man. The whole Apple fanboi thing is just a front to complement my user name. In fact if you go through my post history you will find posts where I've criticized Apple many times (the Maps fiasco etc.).

Relax, they already copied the lock screen, multitasking with previews, quick settings panel, notifications panel pulldown, etc. They'll get around to it eventually.

+1

The only thing they do better IMO is make the native stuff a little smoother. (Compared to Touchwiz, Sense ... not Pure Android)

i've used windows mobile/pocketpc, android, noikia/symbian, palmOS and a tiny amount of iOS and blackberry.

windows mobile had some great features years before the iphone ever hit.

its like apple engineers were reading xda and playing with a windows mobile phone for years before taking the 'best' in designing the iphone.

....uh wait.

eta isn't it always easier to design something when someone else did the hard work for you & took the lumps? since apple started with a clean slate, they had none of the challenges of pleasing the pocketPC crowd, windows mobile 5 & 6 crowds and a legacy codebase that had roots in the early 2000s to maintain support for legacy apps.

its easy to build something when you have 10+ years of research other companies did in creating the market and you haven't written a single line of code yet.

Got excited thinking it was reality. That'd be pretty cool

I would prefer that Apple use the notifications screen for something like this. Make it more customizable with widgets/tiles/whatever they want to call them.

If it's useful information you're looking for it's easier to get it there when your phone is locked.

When I've used android, I've never found the widgets as useful as having information available as a notification or on the lock screen.

I just hope it doesn't look like the Windows tablet interface

I know this will come off as a snide remark by a lot of people but this is possibly the right answer.

Apple has shown zero interest in doing this. If it's that important a feature for you to have you either a. Buy an android device so you can have the feature or b. Buy an android device and refuse to give Apple more money when they're not listening to you.

Most likely, Apple will come up with another way. If the problem is actually information accessibility, there are better ways to get it to you. I think my way works better than home screen widgets.

ETA: honestly, I think that most iPhone users who ask for stuff like this have no idea why they want it. Most of them will say, "Android does it...why won't iOS". Are there things lacking in iOS that would be useful? Absolutely, but some of the things people ask for are probably things they would rarely use.

I think you didn't try the right type of widgets.

While, yes, a lot of widgets just show information, many of them are interactive and work like having a little app running all the time. For example, on my main home screen I have a todo widget and a time tracking widget. The todo widget allows me to very quickly glance at the list, add a task, check an item off, set alarms, etc. The time tracking widget makes it very quick to add projects, and start/stop running time on one. I have more widgets on other screens for stock tracking, my calendar, music player, etc. I can't see all of this being as handy using just notifications and the lock screen.

I actually had a Droid Incredible before my iPhone and honestly I just don't think there's a comparison. My droid's battery was trash within a year and it crashed constantly. I probably could have kept my 4S for three years instead of two (which my wife still has hers) and it run just fine. I think that in general is why I enjoy Apple products more. The design seems to be so much cleaner, the interface tighter, and while they do update their product line every year, their products still work without a hitch for years.

I did like the widget function my droid had, but the system is just too....I don't know...not sleek enough for me. I like the way this concept keeps the widgets within the same grid as current apps do, but you could potentially just change how many squares it takes up.

That would be pretty useful I have to say. Say being able to have a calculator and a list out at the same time or something like that.

This would be pretty cool I suppose, but I would prefer this kind if functionality in the notification center. Some of it already exists there (you can check off completed tasks/reminders without unlocking the scree). Plus, a widget is going to reduce the amount of home screen real estate I have more my most used apps.

I just don't see widgets as being that big a deal. Nice to have? I suppose, but it's not at the top of my list of things I want in iOS.

Basically how I feel. I think it'd be cool to have that functionality in some way, but it's not like I'm gonna switch away from all the other benefits just for that.
