Heard someone I went to high school with singing a song in tribute to a relative that had just died. It was a touching tribute, but let's just say he shouldn't quit his day job.

This got me thinking about musical talent in the days before recorded music. I assume people just amused themselves by singing and playing instruments with friends and relatives, but was it any good? Were people more musically talented because they had to provide their own entertainment?

I think concerts were invented for this purpose before the recording process was invented.

There were no movies, television, and not everyone could afford concerts, opera or whatever. Someone in the family learned to play some sort of instrument, and people sang for the sake of singing to amuse and entertain themselves.

In our day and time, I think, we are WAY more self-conscious about being cool or whatever to have sing-alongs at parties, or whatever. Obviously we'll lighten up a bit around Christmas, but that's it. To get people going at a party takes a very confident, dynamic person who can get people to follow them.

IMO.
