MacBook Pro 09': Try to repair or replace?

So I was trying to do a system update on my MBP 09 when while I was going through the update it froze. I thought it was just taking awhile but an hour later it was still on the "one min remaining screen." I shut the computer down. When I go to reboot I get a grey screen with a blinking folder, that's it.
I googled the issue and nothing seems to work. I have most of my files backed up but would still like to get into my computer. Should I just let it die and get a replacement? Or try and bring to the Apple store for a repair? Being 5 years old it might be time for a new laptop but I dunno if I'm ready to shell out $1500.

I would absolutely try to fix it before just dumping it and dropping 1500+ on a new laptop.

take it to the apple store, while customer service has dropped as of late, they still are amazing at fixing stuff.
I bet they get you up and running.
we have a macbook from 2009 that is on its last legs, trying to eek another year out of it. battery life is like 15 mins.

I'm on a mid-09 MBP right now. I've replaced the battery once and I upgraded from 2GBs to 8GBs of RAM and I replaced the HDD with a SSD. I know people will typically replace their computers every 4-6 years but something drastic would have to happen for me to ditch this one as it stands now. Honestly runs much better than when I bought it. Battery life is still kind of meh ( I get about 4-5 solid hours of use on a charge), but that's because I went cheap and didn't replace the battery with an official Apple replacement.
My father just got a MBP late last year, and while it feels fresher and quicker, using it has shown me that it would be a huge waste of money to replace my current mbp with a brand new one.

I started getting the blinking folder with a question mark when I put the computer to sleep. I have to do a hard restart (sometimes 2-3 times in a row) for it to reboot. Eventually, it reboots and runs fine. Now, I just leave the top open and the computer on.

MacBooks don't always have to cost $1500 anymore.
The MacBook Air starts at $899. I bet even the base Air model will be much faster than your 2009 Pro.
If you don't want to spend even that much, the best upgrade you can do for your MacBook would be to put in more RAM and an SSD. The SSD will give you the biggest bang for buck in terms of speed.

Upgraded the RAM and HD in my '08 last year and it's still kicking great. If I could upgrade the processor it would be damn near a new computer.

I just had the same problem with a 2009 Mac mini and replaced the HDD. It cured the problem.

I am not sure putting an $150 into it is worth it, plus its my wife's computer. She can be tethered to the wall.

I don't understand this. I have been able to upgrade to the latest OS versions on the 2009 mini

I have no clue but I'm sure it is possible that the early 09 MBP's have a more limited chipset than those included in later MBP's.
I have an MBP that was manufactured in July of 09 and I'm running Mavericks

i'm rocking a late 2008 macbook, upgraded to 4gb RAM and a SSD after my harddrive crashed. runs great and still get a couple of hours out of the original battery on a charge.

Do you have the original RAM or have you upgraded it? I found that when I upgraded my RAM a year ago that it would freeze during an update or reinstall. When I inserted the original RAM, the update would proceed normally. I would then replace the original RAM with the aftermarket RAM and everything worked fine.

Have a mid year 2009 model that is still kicking but would like to upgrade to a SSD. Any advice on brand or where to get it?
