The latest US Census showed Columbus added 33,000 residents last year, growing to 822,553 residents (15th largest city in US) and continued a trend of significant growth in the city, as well in the suburbs (2.3 million MSA) . Columbus is the only Midwestern city to show significant gains in both city and suburban population. Add in the fact that Columbus is only in the beginning of a downtown population boom that could add an additional 20-30k residents. The Columbus Metro also continues to add residents at a significant rate, expecting to add 500,000 residents by 2030. My question is will we ever see Columbus become a Major League city? I know Columbus has the Blue Jackets, Crew and Machine, but could Columbus be a NBA city? The Mayor of Columbus has stated many times they want a NBA team. Meanwhile, every other major city in Ohio is shrinking to the point where one has to ask if they are able to support 2 or 3 Major League franchises (especially Cleveland). I think the NBA in Columbus would be perfect.

And I think Seattle is first on that wait list.

This is more to my point though. I think we need more cities like New Orleans, Oklahoma City and Green Bay, where fans are more attached to their team and follow them . Cities that have 4-5 pro teams lack devoted fans IMO. Adding a team in Seattle would give them 4 professional franchises. Too much imo!

Yea.

Columbus is a victim of an already saturated professional sports state between Cleveland and Cinci. It'd be interesting if the table could be reset which of the three would get the two NFL teams, the two baseball team and the Cavs.

I think the only way Columbus would ever get a NBA franchise is if the Cavs moved here.

Also, population =/= sports franchises. Look at San Antonio for example.

I actually think the team Cleveland could lose is the Indians. They have been dead last in attendance last year and this year....and have a good team. For the most part, Cleveland supports the Cavaliers well. Cleveland can not support the Indians anymore IMO. I was thinking more like the Milwaukee Bucks relocating to Columbus?

Columbus has been on the rise for the past couple of years despite what this board will tell you. I personally don't want another professional sports team here though.

You already have pro sports. Austin is bigger than C-Bus and still doesn't have one.

Another city that won't get any due to oversaturation within the state.

Columbus is 27/30 in NHL attendance and 14/19 in MLS attendance.

Got to show up to support the pro franchises you already have.

Until the past 1.5 seasons, the Blue Jackets were consistently terrible and the front office consistently made awful decisions. Attendance of any team outside of the original 6 would follow the same story in that type of a situation. 10+ years of losing will do that most NHL venues. I can't really articulate on the Crew because I don't follow them at all.

Its not a jab, it is what it is but its fairly telling that Columbus made the playoffs in the NHL for the second time this year and the attendance was still terrible.

Im just saying that any prospective owner from a new franchise interested in moving to Columbus is going to look at these things.

I'm not sure Austin wants pro sports teams. That city has almost a small town feel to it in a large metro area. I think the austinites would not be happy

Again, a lot of fans wanted to see consistency before committing to spend the money this year. Later in the season as it became evident of the team's likely sustained success, NWA was pretty packed for a lot of games. I would expect them to break the top 20 next year.

It would have never been a problem if the Jackets showed any signs of hope in the early years (which they didn't at all). They were consistently selling out the first 5ish years. I'm pretty sure one of the major sporting magazines rated them as a top 5 professional sporting event experience during those years.

Columbus pro sports also have to compete with Ohio State. Ohio State will win that battle more often than not, even if it is just basketball. I think the culture is starting to change a bit though.

This is probably the biggest thing, IMO.

Columbus Blue Jackets fans had every right to not show up. We have suffered 10+ years of losing. The first 5 years, Nationwide Arena was selling out. The second half of last season and this season, the fans are showing back up. Nationwide was deafening against the Peguins in the playoffs. The reality is that in terms of pro sports, Columbus is still in its infancy. Now, go look at some of the attendances for franchises that have been in a city for 40+ years and explain to my why they are allowed to have such dismal attendance? Lets be honest, attendance is down across much of pro sports. But back to my point, i think a NBA team in Columbus would be a success! Columbus is becoming a basketball city more and more.

What franchise do you want there? Basketball or football? I don't think baseball is going to ever expand again honestly (I think baseball may be over in 50 years or so).

Football, the state already has 2 teams. That is more than almost any state in the country, and as many as Texas, only really behind Fla. and Cali.

Basketball I guess I could see, but players do not want to play in Ohio. Basketball is a much more "look at me" type sport, I think because you see the athlete's face the whole time. Cavs fans are loyal and great fans, but FAs just don't flock to Ohio
