yesterday. Been wanting to do that for years. Now I need to buy a gun finally.

I'm going to be applying for an Oregon and Utah permit.

For those of you who carry what are your biggest dos and donts when carrying?

Don't carry through the TSA checkpoint!

I still have no fines or letter from the government about that, but just don't.

ETA - I got a permit 5-6 years ago and let it lapse because I didn't conceal carry anywhere. I never felt comfortable carrying in stores, crowds, etc. I keep one in my truck in case I need it, but didn't really conceal carry.

get something you are comfortable carrying... or you will never carry it.

Comfort. Carry something that you are comfortable with.

If you carry in the middle of the back and fall on it the wrong way, you can break your back. Past that, I don't know about any "do's" or "don't's." I think mostly it's just about preference in holster type.

Gun ownership is as simple as knowing you're not carrying it because you can... but because you know you'd know what to do with it if something awful should happen.

So, I guess you could qualify that as a "don't." Don't carry a gun if there's any remote chance it will end up getting used on you. I'd suggest a class that will help you learn to use your gun correctly as well.

Welcome to the club! It's an -amazing- right. It's about having the power to protect us from our own government (among other things). Oh... and rule number #1: It's -always loaded and ABOUT to shoot-, regardless of any hand touching it or if you "unloaded it" a second ago.

Yeah... and what those guys said. If you intend on carrying it, I'd strongly recommend a sub-compact because they're the most comfortable to carry.

Two hours of questioning and watching cops and feds fill out paperwork. I had to reschedule my flight, but so far no real consequences. I think they realized I made an absentminded mistake and had no ill intent.

OP, this is an opinion. You need to form it for yourself. If you want to conceal an AR in your pants and your comfortable roll with it.

I've lost so much weight, even my 34's are falling off my arse. Great pairs of pants, too.

My solution? Carry a bigger gun.

IN my opinion, it's NOT REALLY an opinion that smaller = more comfotable. There's nothing natural about a huge hunk of metal clipped to the INSIDE of a belt or hanging off your ankle or anywhere on your body for that matter. In fact, use the AR analogy for example. There is no comfortable way to shove an AR down your trousers.

It is almost always the case that you will have more comfort the smaller the gun.

Well... I suppose that makes sense... hahahaha. If you're THIS guy, then it would make sense! Who wants to buy a new wardrobe when they could just use a bigger gun?!

Hell dude, with all your fitness talk, you may need to start carrying one on each hip pretty soon.

I hope not. At 5'11", a 31 inch waist is slim enough.

It must have a safey and knock down power or else you're just spraying Beebees down to pants

IF you go sub-compact, I wouldn't necessarily advocate .45 rounds. I recently talked to an older guy that sells guns at Academy and recommended going with an expensive/high grain hollow point 9mm in a subcompact because the .45 caliber rounds don't reach their max potential in a shorter barrel. He was specifically referring to the XDS .45, and was against it.. but in the same breath said the 9mm version of that particular gun was still solid if you buy good ammo.

Me personally, I'm a big time .40 fan. (not in reference to a sub-compact, just in general)

Any of y'all heard anything about a subcompact barrel length not facilitating enough distance in a barrel for a bullet to travel to reach what it's capable of in higher caliber rounds?
