When I worked in finance if someone were to walk in on an office conversation I doubt they would have any idea what we were talking about because acronyms were rampant. I also know they were rampant in the military and are very common in police work. How often are acronyms used in your line of work and if a person not in your field could listen in on an office conversation would they have any idea what you were talking about?

Oil and Gas (Pipelines). We use alot of military acronyms along with alot of drug references. We also use military time on the operations side.

Used all the time and when I first started here I had no fricking clue what half the stuff they were talking about

Got most of them by now

And the average person would probably have no idea what any of them meant

I do environmental consulting for the O&G industry. Acronyms are rampant. It's absurd. Mainly government created acronyms though.

EPA, LDEQ, TCEQ, TRRC, PBR, GHG, eGGRT, EDMS, etc...

Too many
PDAS
ELL
SS
ADHD
ADD
SPED
That is the basic. These gay female teachers come up with so many stupid acronyms that you talk in code. Making learning more confusing. You guys are right, its the lazy teachers fault!

It is very difficult when starting a new job and the seasoned personnel throw out acronyms that you don't know but you are hesitant to say anything for fear that you should know them or will look like a fool. i remember those days well.

I'm in the environmental field and we probably use almost as many acronyms as the military.

There are so many acronyms in the military, so that even within each service each acronym may have two or three meanings! You really must know the context of whomever's speaking to decipher their speech...

I work in chemical R&D, so every other word is an acronym. We use them to describe chemicals, processes, specs, equipment, departments... Even though it's relatively tame stuff I doubt anyone would have a clue what we're talking about.

I don't really use a lot of acronyms, but I use a lot of initialisms, which is what most people in this thread are referring to.

Not an acronym but I think a donkey dick has quite a few different meanings.
