Grant supervised a canal that was never completed across the river from Vicksburg.

I went to high school in that area. Many pleasant memories of parking between the river and the levee on the Louisiana side.

America's 1st serial murderers, Big & Little Harp roamed the Natchez Trace and the Miss Lou area. They had a hideout on Vidal Island on the back side of Lake Concordia.
On one occasion to entertain their gang, they had them waiting at the bottom of the bluff. Up top they captured a merchant coming from New Orleans. Stole all his stuff, stripped him naked, tied to a horse and then ran the horse off the bluff to crash as a bloody mess in front of their gang.
Several gang member were so sickened by the roaring laughter of the Harps, they left as soon as they could.
ETA: this happened farther up the Natchez trace.

If you get off I20 before crossing over to MS, you can find part of the canal still there.
