I'd like to think that I could get out of a sinking car if I had to. The main obstacle would be panic.

Wonder if an Optometrist could be a coroner?

Accident pro tip: drive with a crack in your window to make the door easier to open

I did it out of a sinking helicopter, difficult when you clothing catches on obstacles you have to climb over, when laying on your side

I feel bad for those who died because I have to believe that they didn't intend this result. It must be more difficult than it seems.

Drive with a crack in the window to make it easier to kick out.

It won't do anything for the door until the water fills up the car. Which will happen whether or not there's a crack in the window.

Tip: Don't suck at driving.

Mythbusters did an entire show on this. What was interesting was that despite the ultra controlled circumstances of doing it in a pool, clear water, daytime, safety diver in the car and a scuba tank next to the guy he still freaked out. Panic would absolutely be the biggest obstacle.
