Soccer rules question

We all know that keepers can't pick up the ball if it is passed back to them by a teammate, but I was watching some highlights from the 70s and 80s and saw that it wasn't always the case. Anyone know when the rule was changed?

I honestly think it's a pretty stupid rule. Pros are good enough not to be affected but it causes some trash goals at the lower levels.

It changed in the early 90's to speed the game up.

quote:I like the rule (wish they would expand it to include headers) because you can easily waste a ton of time if the keeper can pick up every pass back.

I may have been too strong there. I can see the positives obviously. Maybe I'm just bitter that I played with some horrible keepers.
Honestly though, I played with some great ones too. One of then will play in the MLS. Another one would have if his dad wasn't a bum. Most raw talent I've ever seen.

I'm trying to remember when the rule was changed from 2 points for a win to 3 points. I think it might have been in the 80s.
ETA: Hmm....seems like World Cup 1994 was the first international tournament to use that system. Wow.

Much later.

It's not a stupid rule.
If your were up by 1 with 10 minutes left teams used this as a delaying tactic. Kick the ball back to the GK and he goes to pick it up, but waits, waits, waits for a player on the opposite team to get close, then he picked tge ball up, then he passes the ball back to a defender who passes the ball back to the GK who waits, waits, waits, then gets a free kick.
Now, the GK can't waste as much time or else the forward can tackle the ball away and score, also after picking a ball up the GK has 6 seconds to kick the ball, which usually turns into 10 seconds.
So every back pass, when ahead late, probably took 15 extra seconds than it does today.

Ricky Gervais, as David Brent, does a hilarious bit on this by talking about the "awesome discipline" liverpool midfielders had in the 70's to pass the ball back to the goalie literally everytime they touched the ball.

Like others said, early 90s. There's a article out there (I think on whoateallthepies) with gifs of the most absurd back passes of all time. Some are pretty hilarious. You had defenders dribbling through opposing players going toward their own goal just to pass it back to the keeper, etc.

im pretty sure it was the 94 world cup that was the catalyst for the change. People were tired of time being wasted in the world cup with passes back to the keeper.
No, I think it was the '90 World Cup. They also changed the scoring for wins from 2 points to 3 around that time. The World Cup field was expanded from 24 to 32 starting in 1998.

Yes...The shitty low-scoring 1990 world cup led to the back pass rule in 92, first cup used was USA 94. Also first cup to use 3 pt wins to discourage draws.
