Josey - The Dog

Thinking about sending him off to training. I hate doing this, because I've always trained my dogs myself. I worked with him since I've had him, until I changed jobs at the end of February. Since then, I haven't worked him at all. The new job is consuming me...on top of that, me and the wife are expecting our second child in less than a month - so, things aren't going to slow down for a while.
During the time I worked with Josey, he's been great and picked up on commands quicker than any other lab I've had. I don't force-fetch my dogs and they turn out great, but I know a lot of trainers do force-fetch. To each their own, I just find that force-fetched dogs turn out skittish as hell, and I'd rather not have that for Josey - who I want to be a great family dog as well.
All this being said, does the ODB have any suggestions for trainers? And because I've never let anyone train my dog, what's the going rate? I had someone quote me $550 a month, which includes food.

Every dog man I know including myself uses the force breaking as a foundation to eliminate refusal later down the road. I understand that an over zealous attempt at force breaking will produce a timid dog. If done correctly the dog will be anything but timid. I truly believe I could make my dog charge into a burning building to retrieve a duck. A certain amount of responsibility on the master's part comes along with a properly force broke dog.
$550 is the average for training, board, and dog meal.

I'm going out this weekend to check out this fellas set up, and how he trains his dogs - force-fetched. So, who knows...maybe I'll give. I think I'm going to have a hard time finding a trainer that doesn't use that training method. If I feel comfortable enough with he and his dogs, I'll likely leave Josey there.

Some people think it is introducing pain to get the dog to perform a certain task. I try to scale that down to "uncomfortable" so the dog realizes that he will never be uncomfortable as long as he does what is expected. One way to make a dog uncomfortable is to get really close face to face and exhale. This is something their mothers do when the pup is really young to let them know mother doesn't approve of their actions.
You can google and read a wealth of info on the topic. Some good some bad. To be completely honest I probably messed up a few when I started and had to take even more time fixing what I messed up. Now days I am completely comfortable when working with a new pup.
To the OP:
If you find a trainer that thinks he can go into force breaking the same week he meets the dog I would be very cautious of that trainer. One really needs to learn the dog before trying any of this.

Bu-Yah Retrievers. I'm not personal friends with this guy, but my sister-in-law is good friends with he and his wife. From what I hear, it like he runs a pretty nice operation. After speaking with him today, I figure I'll at least take Josey out to him for a little meet and greet. I told him before I give him the reigns of my dog, I want to see him with his other dogs, and try some basic commands with Josey.

This is the pup that was purchased at the benefit that Balls delivered. OP worked with EJW and bought the dog on the auction block.

JD is a old friend of mine. He learned from one of the best and I'm sure he will get Josey where he needs to be.
