I've only recently started working out seriously again. The only supplement type thing I take is just some whey protein after a workout. The last batch I bought came with a free sample of amino acid. Specifically, "Essential AmiN.O. Energy" powder.

What is the deal with this? The packaging makes it out to be a pre-workout (talks about giving energy before a workout and stuff), but also says you can take some whenever the hell you feel like, any part of the day. So I don't know. I've only taken a "pre-workout" once and didn't like it, made me feel kinda jittery and made me sweat a lot. I know amino acids are the building blocks of protein (am I remembering that right from high school?), is this stuff basically just a nice little complement to taking whey after a workout? What exactly does it do, and is it typically meant to be taken before a workout or does it matter?

During!? Seems like a hassle to stop halfway. I workout in the mornings in my apartment gym so typically I just do my thing without taking a water break or anything.

What is the benefit of taking it at that time?

I'm still a novice, can you elaborate? I know that to see gains you have to tear the muscles down so they can regenerate bigger. Are you saying this helps reduce losing muscle during the workout? If so, why would it matter if I took it beforehand?

just mix it with a cup of water and drink between sets. You don't have to stop and chug it in the middle.

It's a pre-workout with BCAA's in it. It's the one that I use because it doesn't have as much caffeine or vasodilators in it so i don't get that jittery, itchy, flushed-skin feeling I do with the other ones.

Basically you could take it anytime in the day you'd need a cup of coffee.

Interesting. Would the benefits of it be reduced if you take it any random ol time, rather than pre-workout?

Your body can't do much with protein until it can break it down into separate amino acids. Taking BCAA's or something more simple like glutamine speeds up the recovery process by skipping all that digestion and feeding those muscles you just tore up.

Some aminos can do different things, but they're all important. Glutamine helps build muscle. Arginine is a vasodilator and expands blood vessels so that those other aminos can travel to muscles more efficiently.

Don't take any during your workout unless it's an 'intra-workout' drink. Otherwise you'll probably just upset your stomach. A proper protein shake should have all the BCAA's you need.

It sounds like you're saying this would be better suited for after the workout?

P.S. - Vasodilators are great. Just get a nitric oxide supplement that doesn't have caffeine or other stimulants. Your pre-workout most likely has both in it plus BCAA's.

Immediately after the workout. Within 30 minutes is ideal, and after an hour or so you start losing effectiveness.

A protein shake will make extra amino supplements unnecessary (don't listen to anyone saying otherwise). EAS is a good brand.

Well what the hell. Since I already take whey after a workout, are you saying the amino powder is pointless? Basically it should either be one or the other?

What would happen if I took the amino powder before and the protein shake after?

i usually don't have the popular opinion on this board when it comes to working out or supplements but in my opinion a well rounded healthy diet is the best way to get the necessary amino acids

the less processed things you put in your body the better

mixed nuts, seafood, red meats, poultry and greens contain tons of healthy amino acids and it's easy to mix them in your diet on a daily basis, if you get into this habit it will benefit you much more in the long run rather than doing this just for "gains"

My diet is great, not worried about that.

I'm not gonna rush out and start pumping myself full of every supplment I can, but I got this free sample so I figured I'd use it. Was really just asking what it actually does and when the best time to take it.
